أعلنت الحكومتان الكمبودية والتايلندية أنّ قائدي جيشي البلدين سيجتمعان، اليوم (الخميس)، لبحث الاشتباك المسلّح الذي وقع على الحدود بينهما الأربعاء، وأدى إلى مقتل جندي كمبودي.
وكتب رئيس الوزراء الكمبودي هون مانيت على صفحته في «فيسبوك»، «آمل أن يُسفر الاجتماع عن نتائج إيجابية تُسهم في الحفاظ على الهدوء».
من جانبه، قال وزير الدفاع التايلندي فومتام ويتشاياتشاي إنّ هدف الاجتماع هو التهدئة، مضيفاً: «لا نريد مواجهة».
وفي وقت سابق (الأربعاء)، أعلن الجيش الكمبودي مقتل أحد عناصره في تبادل لإطلاق النار مع الجيش التايلندي على الحدود بين البلدين، في حادثة نادرة على هذه الحدود الطويلة والحساسة.
وقال المتحدث باسم الجيش الملكي الكمبودي ماو فالا: «أحد جنودنا قُتل خلال الاشتباك، ووقعت بعض الإصابات، لكن لا تتوفر لدينا أرقام دقيقة حتى الآن».
في المقابل، قال الجيش الملكي التايلندي، في بيان، إنّ الاشتباك اندلع بعدما بدأ جنود كمبوديون بإطلاق النار قرب مقاطعة أوبون راتشاثاني، شرقي تايلند.
وأضاف البيان أن الجنود التايلنديين ردّوا على النيران، ما أدى إلى اشتباك استمر نحو 10 دقائق، قبل أن يطلب الجانب الكمبودي وقف إطلاق النار.
The Cambodian and Thai governments announced that the commanders of the two countries' armies will meet today (Thursday) to discuss the armed clash that occurred on their border on Wednesday, which resulted in the death of a Cambodian soldier.
Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet wrote on his Facebook page, "I hope the meeting will yield positive results that contribute to maintaining calm."
For his part, Thai Defense Minister Prawit Wongsuwan stated that the goal of the meeting is to de-escalate, adding, "We do not want confrontation."
Earlier (on Wednesday), the Cambodian army announced the death of one of its members in a gunfight with the Thai army on the border between the two countries, in a rare incident on this long and sensitive border.
Royal Cambodian Army spokesman Mao Phalla said, "One of our soldiers was killed during the clash, and there were some injuries, but we do not have accurate numbers yet."
In contrast, the Royal Thai Army stated in a statement that the clash erupted after Cambodian soldiers began firing near Ubon Ratchathani province, eastern Thailand.
The statement added that Thai soldiers returned fire, leading to a clash that lasted about 10 minutes, before the Cambodian side requested a ceasefire.
