The Sudanese Minister of Health, Haitham Mohamed Ibrahim, announced today (Saturday) an increase in cholera infection rates in Khartoum State, with between 600 and 700 cases reported weekly, confirming that centers for cholera treatment have been prepared in Khartoum State.

He explained that work is underway to purify drinking water, amid warnings of the disease spreading throughout the state, attributing the cholera outbreak to the return of large numbers of residents from Jabal al-Awliya and Al-Salihah to their areas after the army regained control over them, without providing safe drinking water.

Sudanese media reported that 51 people have died as a result of cholera infection, noting that the number of infections has exceeded two thousand cases.

The Sudan Doctors Network revealed that 9 cholera patients have died, confirming that 521 patients have arrived at the "Al-No" Hospital in Omdurman.

The network urged health authorities to take action to prevent the spread of the cholera epidemic and the rise in infection cases, calling on the federal health authorities and the Ministry of Health in Khartoum to disinfect public areas, close markets, prohibit food sales on public roads, and prevent water transport via primitive methods.

The Sudan Doctors Network called on regional and international organizations for urgent response and to provide all medical treatments and vaccines to reduce the risk of cholera outbreak in Khartoum, after it caused a significant increase in the infection and death rates over the past week.

The North Darfur Emergency Room confirmed the death of 20 women in the town of Al-Kouma due to a severe shortage of medicines and medical supplies for safe childbirth.
