Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan met today (Saturday) with his Syrian counterpart Ahmad al-Shara in Istanbul. According to Turkish media, Erdoğan held talks with al-Shara and discussed the common files between the two countries.
Erdoğan had previously called on the Syrian government to focus on its agreement with the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), which stipulates their integration into the Syrian armed forces, emphasizing the necessity of implementing the agreement.
A Turkish security source had mentioned earlier that the head of the Turkish intelligence agency and al-Shara held talks this week in Syria regarding the disarmament of the armed Syrian Kurdish People's Protection Units (YPG) and their integration into Syrian security forces.
According to the Turkish news agency "Anadolu," the head of the Turkish intelligence agency met in Damascus, alongside al-Shara, with Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shabani and Intelligence Chief Hussein al-Salama, indicating that the meeting discussed bilateral relations between Turkey and Syria, emphasizing the importance of Syria's territorial integrity, sovereignty, and political stability.
The meeting stressed the integration of the Kurdish People's Protection Units, similar to other groups in Syria, after laying down their arms. Additionally, border security and customs crossings were discussed, as well as the handover of prisons and camps where ISIS elements are held to the Syrian government.
The Turkish president had stated on Thursday, in remarks to reporters aboard the plane during his return from a visit to Hungary, that lifting sanctions on Syria is "a very important step" to achieve stability there and demonstrates how our constructive diplomacy yields results.
Erdoğan suggested the possibility of visiting the United States and meeting with his American counterpart Donald Trump, noting that Trump's view of Turkey is very positive, and our view of them is the same, highlighting that we have a strong relationship based on mutual respect and honesty.
