Amid rising European anger against Israel, gunfire from occupation soldiers directed at a group of diplomats in Jenin in the occupied West Bank has drawn widespread condemnation from the European Union, Italy, Spain, Belgium, and France, considering it a "threat" to the diplomats, and they demanded clarification on the circumstances of what occurred.

EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell called on Israel today (Wednesday) to investigate and hold accountable those responsible for the gunfire during the visit of the delegation, which also included several journalists, stating at a press conference in Brussels: Any threats to the lives of diplomats are unacceptable, and Israel is a party to the Vienna Convention, which obliges it to ensure the safety of all foreign diplomats.

While Italy, France, and Spain announced they were summoning Israeli ambassadors for an official clarification, Norwegian Deputy Foreign Minister Andreas Motsfeldt Kravik urged the international community to take action and impose sanctions on Israel to change its behavior in the occupied Palestinian territories.

Kravik warned Israel in press statements against not changing its behavior, emphasizing that it is unacceptable for aid to be blocked from entering Gaza while there is a suffering population.

He called for greater pressure on Israel to persuade it to negotiate a ceasefire, noting that Oslo wants Tel Aviv to end hostilities, cease fire, and allow aid to enter.

He pointed out that Israel is not a homogeneous entity, and there are forces within it calling for an end to hostilities.

The Israeli occupation army claimed that the gunfire near the diplomatic delegation occurred after it deviated from an approved route in the occupied West Bank, asserting that the delegation entered an area where it was not authorized to be and that soldiers fired warning shots to disperse its members.

In contrast, the Spanish Foreign Ministry stated that one of its nationals was among the group of diplomats and was unharmed, indicating that it is in contact with other affected countries to coordinate a strong joint response to the incident.

French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian confirmed that he would summon the Israeli ambassador after diplomats, including French nationals, were shot at in Jenin, while Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani announced that he had instructed his ministry to summon the Israeli ambassador in Rome for an official clarification.

The German Foreign Ministry condemned the "unjustified" gunfire by the occupation army at a diplomatic delegation near Jenin, stating that the delegation included a German diplomat and a driver from the representation office in Ramallah, and that it is a formally registered delegation conducting diplomatic activities in coordination with both the Palestinian Authority and the Israeli army.
