While awaiting the announcement of the date for the new round of negotiations between Washington and Tehran, which is likely to be held in Rome, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi reiterated that his country seeks a fair agreement with the United States and a tangible lifting of sanctions.
He announced after meeting with his Omani counterpart Badr al-Busaidi on the sidelines of the "Tehran Dialogue Forum" today (Sunday) in Tehran that "the time and place for the next round of negotiations with the United States have been determined, and it will be announced soon," according to the Iranian Student News Agency. Araghchi added that Tehran has not received any written message or offer from the American side.
He emphasized during his speech at the forum the necessity of lifting sanctions that directly target the Iranian people. He announced that Tehran is ready to open a new page in its relations with Europe if there is a genuine will and an independent approach from European countries.
He stated that his country "has never sought to possess nuclear weapons," clarifying that it is committed to relevant international treaties, foremost among them the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT).
He added that Tehran expects its Western partners to respect its nuclear rights, and that any new agreement must include a complete, genuine, and tangible lifting of sanctions, noting that his country remains committed to diplomatic solutions.
Meanwhile, the Omani Foreign Minister expressed during his speech at the forum his optimism about President Donald Trump's seriousness in achieving peace in the region.
Trump emphasized two days ago that Iran must never be allowed to obtain nuclear weapons, hinting at the military option if talks fail to reach a new nuclear agreement. However, he did not clearly rule out allowing Iran to enrich uranium on its territory.
Since April 12, the Iranian and American delegations have held four rounds of indirect talks mediated by Oman, the results of which have been described as positive.
