Today (Sunday), a humanitarian aid ship departs from the Spanish port of Barcelona, carrying prominent activists including Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg, in a new attempt to break the blockade imposed on the Gaza Strip. According to the organizers, this initiative is part of what they described as the "largest solidarity mission in history," with dozens of other ships expected to set sail from ports in Tunisia and Mediterranean countries in early September.

The fleet, led by the "Global Solidarity Fleet Alliance," aims to open a humanitarian corridor to the besieged coastal area and put an end to what activists describe as the "ongoing genocide of the Palestinian people." Participants include, in addition to Thunberg, European lawmakers and public figures, including former Barcelona mayor Ada Colau and Portuguese MP Mariana Mortágua, who confirmed that the mission is legal under international law.

Thunberg, a member of the fleet's steering committee, announced via Instagram that the journey will coincide with demonstrations and protests in 44 countries around the world in solidarity with the Palestinians.

This attempt comes after Israel thwarted similar efforts twice in recent months. In June, Israeli forces intercepted the sailing ship "Madeline" and arrested 12 activists, including Thunberg, before later expelling them. In July, another ship carrying 21 activists from ten different countries was intercepted.

However, campaign organizers assert that this attempt will be the largest and most impactful, with expectations that the fleet will reach the shores of Gaza by mid-September.
