Psychological Specialist: Regulate Your Sleep Hours
A psychological specialist has urged students to reorganize their sleep schedules after the long vacation during which they were accustomed to staying up late. According to Dr. Ahmed Salem Bahammam, a sleep medicine professor at King Saud University, there is a close link between sleep quality and academic performance levels among students. An international scientific study involving more than 3,600 adolescent students showed that lack of sleep negatively impacted their ability to maintain focus during classes and increased their absenteeism compared to those who get enough sleep. He explained that the results of a study conducted at the university on medical students revealed a correlation between insufficient nighttime sleep and increased daytime drowsiness and decreased academic performance. He pointed out that one of the main reasons disrupting sleep regularity is students' habit of staying up late during the summer vacation, which disrupts the natural biological clock and makes waking up early on the first days of school a challenge, affecting timely attendance and weakening the quality of class participation and various activities. Bahammam clarified that getting enough sleep strengthens the neural connections responsible for long-term memory, making students more capable of recalling information and utilizing it in tests and academic tasks, thus achieving higher academic rates. He stated, "The impact of sleep disruption is not limited to the academic side; it extends to behavior and mental and physical health. Students who suffer from lack of sleep are more prone to stress, anxiety, mood swings, and aggressive behaviors. Health-wise, lack of sleep weakens the immune system and affects growth and metabolic hormones, increasing the likelihood of illness and leading to weight issues and difficulties in the normal growth of adolescents."
