Experts in media and journalists have criticized the entry of those with no connection to the profession into this field. They told "Okaz": that true and credible media has become perplexed due to some individuals infiltrating the profession without talents or abilities. They described these individuals as "advertisers," who have no real connection to the profession. The speakers pointed to some who use the title of journalist to cover events and exaggerate them, praising and flattering their hosts in exchange for money. They called on the relevant authorities to intervene and establish regulations to prevent impersonation of journalists.
Covering events and advertisements
The head of the Media and Communication Department at King Khalid University, Dr. Ali Zuhair, believes that the best term for those who call themselves "journalists," without being affiliated with official media channels, whether visual, audio, or written, is "media climbers." These are individuals who lack knowledge of the fundamentals of media work, have not learned the laws and ethics of journalism, and have no background on society and its demands and desires. The content produced by these intruders is merely representation, capturing moments on social media or individuals working to garner praise or flattery and appearing on the backs of others, with their goal being financial gain from advertisements. They call themselves "journalists," while the profession is innocent of them. Unfortunately, we see this often, and I hope that the relevant authorities will look into these violations.
Crossing to attend events
Journalist and opinion writer Ali Al-Akasi says: We all believe in updating, developing, and adapting to changes in all systems and institutions, and the media direction is an important part of the modernization and development that we do not disagree on. Because it is so, like other official institutions, it cannot be subjected to luxury and entertainment or become a profession for those without a profession, considering it a true voice and window reflecting the civilization and development of peoples. In the era of credible and responsible media, the media profession was regulated and disciplined, and only the talented and professional could dare to engage in it. Al-Akasi added: Today, we witness situations that are unworthy of us, and these individuals will not provide us with credible media content if this field remains an open gateway for anyone and everyone, leading to further collapse in its credibility and professionalism.
Al-Akasi adds: Some who are entangled in this profession have turned it into a means to attend events and a path for flattery, creating a new profession in the arts of begging and building private relationships. True media is serious about sifting through competitors in the profession and will distinguish between the talented journalist and others.
They are in one valley
And the profession is in another valley
The director of the radio station in Asir, Saeed Mashhoor, believes that media is a noble profession with intrinsic and scientific regulations that only those who meet the criteria to be a journalist in the true sense can master. Recently, we have noticed many individuals from both genders calling themselves "journalists," and unfortunately, the media is in one valley while they are in another. He added: They take pictures and videos, or comment in a clearly awkward manner on a scene or specific scenes, then they think of themselves as "journalists," and they practice the two terms. These are advertisers searching for invitations, attendance cards, and financial returns, and I hope that the relevant authorities will focus on establishing specific, clear, and explicit regulations for anyone wishing to join the media profession so that media remains noble and carries a high message.
Glorification, praise, and superficiality
Journalist Hassan Al-Qubaisi said: Event journalism, or what some call "walking journalism," is considered one of the forms of media coverage that focuses on events and celebrations, completely distancing itself from professionalism and objectivity. It tends to glorification, praise, and flattery, largely ignoring the essence of the event or the core issues related to it. Coverage is often incomplete, limited to recounting what was said and done without deep analysis or investigative journalism. Event journalism may contribute to enhancing the images of elites and officials at the expense of the ordinary citizen, lacking balance in its presentation. This type of journalism, if not regulated by professional standards, will weaken the role of true media and turn it into a public relations tool.
