The General Organization for Social Insurance began, as of yesterday (Tuesday) July 1, 2025, disbursing maternity benefits for working mothers in both the public and private sectors, as part of a package of amendments approved by the new social insurance system recently.
The beneficiary, according to the system, receives a financial compensation equivalent to 100% of her average monthly wage subject to contributions during the 12 months preceding the birth, for a duration of three months starting from the month of birth, with the possibility of extending it for a fourth month if the newborn is ill or has a disability.
The Cabinet approved the disbursement of maternity benefits for working mothers in both the public and private sectors, as part of a package of amendments approved by the new social insurance system on July 2, 2024.
The General Organization for Social Insurance clarified that the benefit will be disbursed to new employees in the labor market who joined the system after July 3, 2024, and who have not previously contributed to the insurance system, including both citizens and residents.
The beneficiary receives a financial compensation equivalent to 100% of her average monthly wage subject to contributions during the 12 months preceding the birth, for a duration of three months starting from the month of birth, with the possibility of extending it for a fourth month if the newborn is ill or has a disability.
The decision aims to support the balance between work life and motherhood responsibilities, and to enhance the stability of female employees in the workplace, without imposing additional burdens on employers, as this benefit is disbursed directly from the organization.
There are three main conditions for eligibility for the benefit: the contributor must be on active duty at the time of birth, must have spent at least 12 months contributing during the last 36 months preceding the birth, and the period between the start date of contributions and the date of birth must not be less than 6 months.
According to the organization, the disbursement of the benefit will be fully automated, as the insurance receives birth data directly from the Ministry of Health, and notifications will be sent to the beneficiary and the employer regarding the commencement of compensation disbursement, without the need to submit any paper or electronic application.
This decision comes as part of a broader trend to develop the social protection system in the Kingdom and achieve the objectives of Saudi Vision 2030 in supporting women's empowerment and increasing their participation in the labor market.
The General Organization for Social Insurance urged all working women and interested parties to visit the "Insurance Awareness" platform on the organization's website, or to contact through its official channels, to learn about the details of the benefit, its conditions, and the related entitlements.
The amendment in the system helps to increase the empowerment and employment of women in the labor market, and to raise the percentage of working women in the Saudi labor market. On the other hand, maternity compensation helps alleviate the financial burdens on employers and entities.
