The Saudi colonnade in the expansion project of the Mataf at the Grand Mosque showcases the art of Saudi architecture.
The colonnade, which includes the Mataf expansion project, is located behind the Abbasid colonnade and surrounds the Kaaba courtyard. It came about when the founding Imam, King Abdulaziz, ordered the expansion of the Grand Mosque to accommodate the increasing number of pilgrims. Work on it began during the reign of King Saud in 1955 and continued through the reigns of King Saud, King Faisal, and King Khalid, with its development completed during the reigns of King Fahd and King Abdullah, up to the era of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Salman bin Abdulaziz.
The colonnade consists of 4 levels: the ground floor, the first floor, the second floor (mezzanine), and the roof. The capacity of the Saudi colonnade has reached 287,000 worshippers and 107,000 circumambulators per hour in the colonnade and the Mataf courtyard.
The colonnade provides wider spaces for the circumambulators and worshippers, according to high-quality and precise engineering standards. It is also distinguished by the availability of all technical and service facilities, as well as sound and lighting systems, which contribute to creating a humble spiritual environment for the guests of الرحمن.
