The tourism of traditional dishes is one of the globally recognized tourism patterns and an important branch of cultural and heritage tourism, as it allows visitors to discover the culture and identity of peoples through their traditional dishes, ingredients, and preparation methods, along with the stories associated with the place and the people.
The Jazan region is characterized by the diversity of its traditional dishes, which rely on local agricultural products that form part of its food and cultural heritage. Its traditional dishes have become a demand for tourists and visitors to the region, due to their unique flavors and inherited preparation methods.
Dr. Riad Al-Sudairi, the director of the Jazan branch of the Stars of Tourism Association, explained that one of the most famous traditional dishes in the region is "Al-Maghsh," which is prepared by placing meat and vegetables in a cylindrical stone pot. Meanwhile, "Al-Khamir" is one of the essential components on the Jazan table; it is roasted corn bread that is finely crumbled and added to the broth.
He added that "Al-Hanith" is prepared by placing salted meat, preferably in large pieces, inside the oven known as "Al-Mifa," while "Al-Marsa" consists of crumbled flour bread mixed with banana and blended with ghee and honey, or sugar when honey is not available, and it is one of the favorite dishes among the locals.
Introducing visitors to the food heritage
Dr. Al-Sudairi pointed out that "Al-Thareed" is prepared by crumbling the corn bread known as "Al-Fateer," soaking it in milk and ghee, and sweetening it with sugar, while "Al-Mufalt" is made by boiling milk and dropping small pieces of corn dough into it until cooked, then adding ghee and sugar.
He explained that "Al-Marzoum" consists of crumbled millet bread, which is stirred over the fire until it solidifies, then placed in a dish with ghee added to its center, while "Al-Makhmoua" consists of millet pie with meat, which is well-mashed, alongside a variety of traditional sweets.
These dishes form an integral part of the cultural and heritage identity of the Jazan region, as they contribute to enriching the tourist experience and introducing visitors to the local food heritage, along with the region's rich agricultural products and traditional preparation methods passed down through generations.
