The Islamic Military Alliance to Combat Terrorism concluded the "Peace Journalists" initiative in the Senegalese capital, Dakar, by training 40 media trainees from both the civilian and military sectors to enhance their capabilities in countering misinformation and extremist rhetoric, and to develop responsible media coverage skills regarding issues of terrorism and extremism.
Deconstructing Extremist Narratives
The program focused on equipping trainees with practical tools for verifying information and digital content, exposing rumors and hate speech, and understanding the methods used by terrorist groups to exploit media and digital platforms to spread their ideas and attract audiences. This enhances journalists' ability to deconstruct extremist narratives and limit their spread. The training addressed professional coverage of security events and crises, the importance of presenting information in its correct context without inciting fear or stigmatizing communities, as well as dealing with the challenges of rapid content circulation and using artificial intelligence tools in its production, while highlighting initiatives for peace, dialogue, and community cohesion.
Raising Community Awareness
The initiative allowed for the exchange of experiences between journalists in both the civilian and military sectors, enhancing their understanding of the common challenges in addressing security issues, and the importance of accuracy and credibility in building public trust and raising community awareness about the dangers of terrorism and extremism.
The implementation of the initiative in the Republic of Senegal is part of the Islamic Military Alliance's efforts to support member states with specialized programs that respond to their priorities and develop their national capabilities in its four areas of work: intellectual, media, combating the financing of terrorism, and military. The conclusion of the "Peace Journalists" program in the Senegalese capital, Dakar, reflects the alliance's commitment to transforming cooperation with member states into practical capacity-building programs, empowering journalists to play a significant role in countering terrorist propaganda, protecting community awareness, and reinforcing the values of peace and moderation.
