The Kingdom's hosting of the Arab summits during the reign of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, was not merely a political gathering of leaders; it transformed into a platform for discussing the crises of the nation and formulating common positions on its most pressing issues, reflecting Riyadh's weight and role in protecting Arab interests and defending its causes.
Three summits... and rising Arab weight
The Kingdom has hosted five pure Arab summits since the establishment of the Arab League, three of which took place during King Salman's reign: the Dhahran Summit in 2018, the emergency Arab summit in Mecca in 2019, and the Arab summit in Jeddah in 2023, alongside two joint Arab-Islamic summits. This repeated presence reveals the Kingdom's status as one of the most prominent platforms for Arab discussions during moments of crises and transformations.
The Dhahran Summit was not ordinary in its implications; King Salman referred to it as the "Jerusalem Summit," emphasizing the centrality of the Palestinian cause in the hearts of Arabs and Muslims. During this summit, he announced Saudi support for the Islamic Waqf funds in Jerusalem and UNRWA, turning the summit into a clear political message regarding the Kingdom's constants towards Palestine.
From regional crises
to unifying the stance
In Mecca in 2019, the Kingdom hosted an emergency Arab summit at the invitation of King Salman to discuss the challenges facing the region and their implications for regional and international security and peace. The Jeddah Summit in 2023 occurred in a highly complex Arab and international context, focusing on enhancing solidarity and joint Arab action and addressing regional challenges.
In Jeddah, the discussion did not limit itself to traditional files; crises in Sudan, Syria, and others were strongly present. The Kingdom emphasized the importance of political solutions that preserve the unity, security, and stability of Arab states, in an approach that reflects Riyadh's desire to shift Arab action from crisis management to seeking solutions.
The summit is a platform... and the Arab stance to the world
The Saudi experience reveals that the Arab summit, in the vision adopted by the Kingdom, is not the end of consultations but a starting point for broader action. During the Kingdom's presidency of the 32nd session, Riyadh hosted an extraordinary joint Arab-Islamic summit regarding Gaza, which led to the formation of an Arab-Islamic ministerial committee to act internationally to stop the war, and then the movement expanded to launch the "International Coalition for Implementing the Two-State Solution."
The Kingdom's hosting of the summits during King Salman's reign translated into a political weight that transcends geographical boundaries; Riyadh, Jeddah, and Mecca welcome Arab leaders at pivotal moments, placing the issues of the nation and the interests of its peoples on the leaders' table before the outcomes of the meetings transition to regional and international diplomatic tracks, reflecting Saudi Arabia's growing role in activating joint Arab action.
