The fourteenth Arab report on cultural development, issued by the Arab Thought Foundation, confirmed that more than 116 million Arabs are unable to afford the cost of sustainable healthy food, given that half of the region's population lives in areas suffering from chronic water scarcity. The Foundation's report on "Arab Food and Water Security: Accumulated Crises and Promising Initiatives" will be launched on October 5, 2026, at the headquarters of the General Secretariat of the Arab League in Cairo.
The report attributed its findings to the worsening reliance on imports, weak infrastructure, and the impacts of climate change. It reviewed successful initiatives such as smart agriculture, modern irrigation, and innovative technologies for managing water and energy, focusing on Arab integration and regional cooperation, and the urgent need to act to address food and water crises in the Arab world and their repercussions.
The launch of the report comes after the adoption of the Sustainable Development Goals ten years ago, at a time when the Arab world faces a dual challenge represented by the fragility of food and water security, amid climate change and ongoing conflicts that impose increasing pressures on essential life resources. It highlights the extent of the gaps and challenges facing the Arab region and presents a vision for addressing current crises through innovative and sustainable solutions. It emphasized that tackling food and water challenges requires urgent Arab action, a shared will, and greater investment in innovation, technology, and infrastructure, ensuring the protection of vital resources, enhancing resilience, and achieving sustainable food and water security for future generations.
The report spans 416 pages and includes twenty chapters prepared by a select group of Arab researchers and experts. It was coordinated and edited by Dr. Muin Hamza and Dr. Omar Al-Bazari, addressing the dimensions of food and water security from environmental, economic, developmental, and technical perspectives, while highlighting the main challenges facing Arab countries in this regard, along with promising initiatives and solutions that can be developed and generalized.
