Nutrition plays a fundamental role in maintaining eye health, as the retina, cornea, and microvessels depend on a range of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants to perform their functions efficiently. Vitamin A is at the forefront of essential elements for night vision, while Vitamin C helps strengthen blood vessels. Lutein and zeaxanthin work to protect the retina from damage, while omega-3 fatty acids help reduce inflammation and support eye health. Conversely, foods rich in sugars and unhealthy fats may contribute to increased inflammation and affect microvessels, negatively impacting vision.
Poor nutrition and deficiencies in certain nutrients are linked to weakened eyesight or dry eyes, while a balanced diet rich in leafy greens, fresh fruits, fatty fish, and nuts helps reduce the risks of some chronic eye diseases, such as macular degeneration, cataracts, and glaucoma, along with the importance of controlling blood sugar and pressure levels and drinking water regularly.
A recent study indicated that the "Noda" virus, found in fish and shrimp, may be linked in very rare cases to the onset of anterior inflammation accompanied by increased eye pressure in individuals who handled raw seafood or came into direct contact with it. A study published in 2026 found the virus in the eye tissues of patients suffering from viral anterior uveitis, with the virus found in the eye matching the virus known in marine organisms by approximately 99%. It was shown that about 71% of cases were among individuals who had direct contact with raw seafood or prepared it without protection, with most infections occurring in individuals who frequently handled raw shrimp or fish or consumed them uncooked. However, this infection remains rare and requires further research to confirm its transmission mechanisms.
Salt and Dry Eyes
Internal medicine specialist Dr. Ashraf Mustafa believes that eye health is closely related to blood sugar levels, nutrition, and lifestyle. He noted that prolonged high blood sugar levels can lead to diabetic retinopathy due to damage to the microvessels in the retina, which may cause fluid leakage or bleeding and a decline in vision, potentially progressing to vision loss in advanced stages.
In his conversation with "Okaz," he pointed out that insufficient water intake may contribute to increased symptoms of dry eyes, especially in susceptible individuals, while there is no strong evidence that moderate caffeine consumption causes dry eyes, although excessive intake may increase the feeling of dryness in some people. Excessive salt intake may be associated with high blood pressure and fluid retention, but it is not considered a direct cause of dry eyes.
Protect Your Eyes with Spinach
Dr. Ashraf confirmed that obesity and lipid disorders are directly or indirectly linked to increased risks of certain eye diseases, especially through their relationship with diabetes, high blood pressure, and vascular diseases. Conditions associated with this may include diabetic retinopathy, cataracts, and some retinal and vascular diseases.
He explained that poor nutrition and deficiencies in certain nutrients can lead to weakened eyesight or blurred vision, depending on the severity and duration of the deficiency and the individual's overall health. To help maintain eye health and reduce the risks of some eye diseases, he advised following a balanced diet rich in vegetables and fruits, especially dark leafy greens like spinach and kale, fatty fish rich in omega-3, nuts, and seeds, along with foods rich in antioxidants, while limiting highly processed foods, unhealthy fats, and excess sugars, and maintaining control over blood sugar and blood pressure levels.
Maintaining the Retina
Optometry specialist Dr. Hamdi Mohamed Jawhar, in his conversation with "Okaz," confirmed that a diet rich in antioxidants, omega-3 fatty acids, and vitamins helps support eye health and protect the optic nerve. He indicated that fatty fish, such as salmon and tuna, are among the beneficial dietary options due to their omega-3 content, which helps maintain retinal health and reduce inflammation.
He noted that certain foods may negatively affect eye health, especially in individuals with diabetes or high blood pressure, which are factors that may increase the risk of glaucoma. Among these are foods high in sodium, as excessive salt intake may lead to high blood pressure and eye pressure, such as canned foods, sausages, salty snacks, potato chips, and industrial sauces. He urged reducing the consumption of soft drinks, sugary beverages, white bread, cakes, sweets, and high-sugar products, explaining that caffeine found in coffee, black tea, and energy drinks may cause a temporary increase in eye pressure in some individuals. Therefore, glaucoma patients are advised to reduce their intake or choose low or caffeine-free alternatives. Additionally, alcohol may affect eye pressure and blood flow to the optic nerve, along with the possibility of impacting the effectiveness of some glaucoma medications.
He emphasized the importance of the body receiving nutrients that support eye health, notably Vitamin A, which helps in forming the necessary pigments for vision in low light and maintains the health of the eye surface. It is found in egg yolks, dairy products, liver, carrots, and spinach. Vitamin C plays an important role in protecting eye tissues from damage and supporting the integrity of blood vessels, with sources including oranges, grapefruits, strawberries, green peppers, and tomatoes. Zinc supports retinal functions and the transport of Vitamin A, with red meats, seafood, nuts, and seeds, especially pumpkin seeds, being among its primary sources.
Dr. Jawhar added that omega-3 fatty acids are essential for maintaining retinal health, hydrating the eyes, and reducing inflammation, and they are found in fatty fish such as salmon and tuna, as well as flaxseeds and walnuts.
Fatty Fish: The Best Food
Ophthalmology consultant Dr. Joseph Habib emphasized in his conversation with "Okaz" that eye health is not only linked to wearing glasses or undergoing regular check-ups but that diet and lifestyle play a significant role in maintaining visual strength and preventing some chronic eye diseases. He explained that healthy nutrition is a crucial foundation for supporting eye health in the long term, as the retina is one of the most active and energy-consuming tissues in the body, thus requiring a continuous supply of nutrients. He pointed out that fatty fish, such as salmon and sardines, are among the best foods supporting retinal health due to their omega-3 content, which helps maintain retinal functions and the integrity of the tear layer. He explained that dark leafy vegetables, such as spinach and kale, are rich in lutein and zeaxanthin, natural antioxidants that accumulate in the retina and protect it from the effects of light and oxidative stress. Colorful fruits, citrus, nuts, seeds, carrots, and sweet potatoes contribute to providing a range of essential vitamins and minerals for eye health, while deficiencies in certain vitamins, particularly Vitamin A, can affect vision health, potentially leading to night blindness in its early stages and, in severe cases, conjunctival and corneal dryness and possibly vision loss if untreated. Vitamins E and zinc also play important roles in protecting retinal cells from oxidative damage, although their deficiencies are less common. He warned against taking dietary supplements indiscriminately without medical evaluation, indicating that improving the diet does not mean the possibility of treating myopia, hyperopia, or astigmatism, as these are refractive issues that require corrective means such as glasses, contact lenses, or refractive surgery when necessary. Healthy nutrition helps maintain eye efficiency and may contribute to slowing the progression of some chronic diseases, such as age-related macular degeneration.
Slowing Macular Degeneration
Dr. Habib points out that dehydration may increase the feeling of dry eyes, and excessive salt intake may exacerbate symptoms in some individuals, especially with low water consumption.
He noted that following a diet rich in leafy greens, fresh fruits, fatty fish, and nuts may be associated with a reduced risk of age-related macular degeneration and may help decrease the risk of cataracts or delay their onset. Antioxidants such as Vitamins C and E, lutein, and zeaxanthin help reduce oxidative stress that the eye lens and retina are exposed to over time. He indicated that certain dietary formulations have proven effective in slowing the progression of macular degeneration in specific patient groups, but they do not completely prevent the disease and do not replace regular follow-ups with an eye doctor.
Do We Need Superfoods?
Regarding raw seafood, Dr. Habib explained that some studies have indicated the presence of viruses or microorganisms in some of these foods, noting that eye infections associated with them are rare but can occur under certain conditions. He urged cooking seafood thoroughly, washing hands after handling raw fish or shrimp, avoiding touching the eyes before cleaning hands, and consulting an eye doctor if severe redness, pain, or blurred vision occurs after exposure to such situations.
He concluded by emphasizing that the eye does not need "superfoods," but rather a balanced lifestyle that includes healthy nutrition, and that prevention remains more effective and less costly than treatment.
Foods That Weaken Vision
Optometry specialist Kareem Atiyah explained to "Okaz" that the quality of food directly affects eye health, as some foods may gradually weaken vision when consumed excessively. Refined carbohydrates such as white bread and pastries quickly raise blood sugar levels, which harms the microvessels in the retina and increases the risk of macular degeneration. A large American study showed that a high-glycemic index diet raises the likelihood of developing age-related macular degeneration, and that about 20% of advanced cases could have been avoided by following a low-glycemic index diet. High sugars cause a spike in blood sugar, which doubles the risk of diabetic retinopathy and vision loss, and refined sugars increase the likelihood of macular degeneration. Salty foods raise blood pressure, hindering blood flow to the retina and increasing the risk of glaucoma. Meanwhile, processed foods high in trans fats increase inflammation and weaken vitamin absorption, exacerbating dry eyes and accelerating vision deterioration over time.
Conclusion
Eye health is linked to an integrated system that includes proper nutrition, lifestyle, and control of chronic diseases such as diabetes and high blood pressure, in addition to regular medical check-ups. A balanced diet rich in leafy greens, fruits, fatty fish, nuts, seeds, and sources of vitamins and antioxidants supports retinal health and reduces the risks of visual diseases. Conversely, specialized doctors recommend limiting sugars, salt, unhealthy fats, and highly processed foods, and avoiding dietary supplements without medical consultation. They emphasize cooking seafood thoroughly, washing hands after handling raw fish and shrimp, and avoiding touching the eyes before cleaning them, along with consulting an eye doctor if severe redness, pain, or blurred vision occurs.
