The world celebrates World First Aid Day on September 8 each year, an initiative launched by the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies in 2000, aimed at raising awareness about the importance of first aid and its role in saving lives, and encouraging community members to acquire skills to handle emergency situations.
The Federation emphasized the importance of rapid response, noting that approximately 475,000 Americans die each year from cardiac arrest, while more than 350,000 cardiac arrest cases occur outside of hospitals annually. It also clarified that 55% of workers do not have access to first aid in the workplace, while drowning causes around 300,000 deaths worldwide each year.
Quick intervention and providing appropriate first aid significantly improve survival chances, as first aid begins with ensuring the safety of the accident scene, the rescuer, and the injured person before providing the necessary assistance. In cases of cardiac arrest outside of hospitals, immediate cardiopulmonary resuscitation can double or triple the chances of survival.
In the Kingdom, the Saudi Red Crescent Authority plays a key role in promoting the culture of first aid and training community members through programs and courses targeting citizens and residents. It also provides the "Mutaheb" platform for training on skills related to cardiac arrest, choking, and bleeding, enhancing the community's readiness to handle emergency situations.
