The photographer for the Washington Post, Heidi Levin, exposed the crimes and terrorism of Israeli settlers in the occupied West Bank, confirming that she was subjected to a violent assault and felt "shocked and humiliated" after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu described the attack as "alleged." Levin revealed that what she experienced is documented with evidence.
The Occupation Army Protects the Settlers
From her hospital bed, in statements to the Associated Press, she said that Netanyahu had sufficient evidence of the attack, expressing her anger at the Israeli army for providing protection to the settlers, in contrast to what she described as negligence in protecting Palestinians from their assaults. The photographer, who has covered events in the region for over 40 years, added that what Israel and the Palestinian territories are witnessing today is unprecedented in her journalistic experience, emphasizing that her goal was not to become the focus of the story, but to document the suffering of Palestinians and the escalation of violence against them. The assault on her occurred on the morning of Friday, October 16, when she arrived with a group of journalists at the olive groves surrounding the village of Abu Falah, northeast of Ramallah, to cover the olive-picking season, amid fears of attacks by settlers.
Injuries and Fractures in the Spine
About half an hour later, dozens of masked men gathered on a hill overlooking the groves, before descending towards the farmers, setting fire to several locations and throwing stones using slingshots, according to testimonies from journalists who were present. As the assaults escalated, Levin was beaten despite wearing a clearly marked "Press" protective vest. She confirmed that she was kicked repeatedly, while footage showed her falling to the ground under the blows of the assailants. Her cameras and phone were stolen, and she was beaten with sticks. The assault resulted in Levin sustaining bruises and wounds all over her body, a broken rib, and four fractures in her spinal vertebrae, in addition to a serious injury to one of her fingers that required surgical intervention. She was transferred to receive treatment in hospitals in Ramallah and Israel.
They Did Not Break My Spirit
Journalists who were at the site accused the Israeli forces of not intervening to stop the settlers, noting that the soldiers fired tear gas at the Palestinians instead of the attackers, while testimonies reported that a Palestinian was shot. Levin affirmed her determination to return to work despite her injuries, saying: "I have invested decades of effort and sacrifices in this work. It is true that they broke my bones, but they did not break my spirit." She sent a message to Netanyahu, saying: "It is time for you to do something."
The assault on Levin comes amid a rise in violence perpetrated by settlers against Palestinians, especially during the olive-picking season that began in late September, while human rights groups indicate that Palestinians are facing assaults, killings, and the destruction of olive trees, which represent an essential part of their heritage and livelihood.
