Thirty displaced people, including women and children, were killed, and dozens were injured in an attack by a drone belonging to the Rapid Support Forces that targeted a shelter for the displaced in the Wad al-Mahi area of the Blue Nile region in southeastern Sudan, according to local authorities.
The governor of Wad al-Mahi, Mahjoub Al-Sheikh, stated that a drone belonging to the Rapid Support Forces targeted the center, resulting in the deaths of 26 women and 4 children, describing the attack as "cowardly." Eyewitnesses confirmed that the attack represents the latest wave of drone strikes affecting the Blue Nile region, and this time it targeted the Wad al-Mahi area near the city of Damazin.
The provincial government warned in a press statement that targeting shelters for the displaced exacerbates an already complex humanitarian situation, given the extremely harsh conditions these individuals face. It called on human rights and humanitarian organizations, as well as the international community, to take responsibility for protecting the displaced from being targeted by the Rapid Support Forces.
The attack comes amid a military escalation witnessed in the Blue Nile state in recent days, following attacks launched by the Rapid Support Forces and their ally, the Sudan People's Liberation Movement/North, on several areas in the state.
Sudan has been experiencing a war between the army and the Rapid Support Forces since April 2023, which has claimed the lives of tens of thousands and forced around 13 million people to flee, marking one of the largest displacement crises in the world.
