The U.S. representative to the United Nations Security Council confirmed support for Saudi Arabia and the Yemeni government in their self-defense. He stated in a session before the council (on Friday): "We continue to work with our partners to confront the threat of the Houthis and defend freedom of navigation."
He called on Iran to stop its support for the Houthis, pointing out that the Yemeni group is a tool used by Tehran to destabilize the region.
The UN envoy to Yemen, Hans Grundberg, warned of the seriousness of the phase the country is going through, emphasizing that the Houthi group's threats to international navigation negatively impact global markets amid escalating military operations and the widening scope of confrontations. Grundberg stated that Yemen is going through a pivotal phase, stressing the need to respect UN resolutions related to the country, amidst fears of the repercussions of continued escalation on regional security and international trade.
These statements from the UN envoy come as several Yemeni governorates witness confrontations and intensive airstrikes, coinciding with rising tensions in the Red Sea and the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, one of the most important maritime routes for global trade.
In a related context, the UN Assistant Secretary-General called for the release of UN staff members detained by the Houthi group in Yemen, amid ongoing concerns for their safety. The office of the UN envoy announced on Wednesday, October 7, the conclusion of Grundberg's visit to the capital, Washington, during which he held discussions with senior officials at the U.S. State Department, the National Security Council, and the Department of Defense "the Pentagon," in addition to American and Yemeni experts.
According to the UN statement, the discussions addressed the latest developments in Yemen and their security implications for the region. Grundberg emphasized during the meetings the importance of continued regional and international commitment to the political track, as it is the way to reach a comprehensive solution to the conflict and achieve stability in Yemen and neighboring countries.
Prior to the Washington visit, diplomatic moves included Oman and Saudi Arabia, where the UN envoy met with representatives of the Houthis and regional officials in an attempt to halt the escalation and bring the parties back to the negotiating table. According to the Associated Press, those meetings focused on containing the escalating confrontations, especially following military developments on Yemen's western coast and increasing concerns about the safety of navigation in the Red Sea.
For its part, the German Foreign Ministry condemned the attacks carried out by the Houthi militia on Saudi Arabia recently. In a statement via X platform, it called on the Houthis to immediately stop all attacks on Saudi Arabia. Germany emphasized its full support for Saudi Arabia, affirming the kingdom's right to defend its territory and protect its people against these terrorist acts.
