One of the popular proverbs says, "Clench your fist and a thousand doctors will come to you." This proverb applies to what is happening on social media platforms, where some classify themselves as "folk doctors," claiming to heal the wounds of the suffering under the guise of folk medicine. New media spaces have become filled with them, exploiting people's pain to drain their pockets by offering costly treatment recipes and herbal mixtures, regardless of the serious harm these mixtures may cause to patients' lives. Ironically, some of these individuals impersonate hospital doctors, asking patients to provide them with translated medical reports, X-ray images, and lab tests to deceive them into believing in the credibility of their activities. Others roam between mosques searching for elderly individuals suffering from nerve diseases who cannot kneel or prostrate, all without regard for the sanctity of places of worship. Strangely, the fake doctor requires patients to pay an advance of 1,000 riyals before starting treatment!
Abandoning the doctor's plan
“Okaz” surveyed the opinions of several specialists on the issue. Initially, social worker Alia Al-Shamrani stated that folk or alternative medicine has a significant negative impact on those suffering from diseases, whether the effects are psychological, physical, or financial. We do not blame those afflicted by illnesses; they seek wellness by any means necessary, but they resort to unsafe methods that may harm their health, turning to folk medicine and looking for those who have intruded into the profession. Social media platforms have aided them in marketing themselves, gaining fame, and making money by exploiting people's pain and selling them illusions.
Al-Shamrani added that many patients, especially those suffering from chronic diseases, reach a point of despair and are forced to seek out folk medicine practitioners, believing that healing lies in the hands of these individuals. Some may abandon the medications prescribed by their treating doctors in the hospital and discontinue their treatment plans, spending a long time consulting folk doctors, which delays their treatment plans or causes new symptoms to appear, worsening their condition due to the mixtures or herbs.
Al-Shamrani pointed out that herbs can cause reactions harmful to human health. In addition to physical effects, there are financial repercussions; patients may spend large sums of money consulting these practitioners, draining their pockets by selling them mixtures and herbs at exorbitant prices, which can financially exhaust the patient. There are also psychological effects; after a long time, the patient may find no benefit from treatment with these practitioners, leading to shock and severe depression, exacerbating their medical condition and resulting in psychological disorders that are difficult to treat. It is essential to avoid sellers of illusions, not to risk health, and to seek treatment in hospitals. It is clear today that these individuals are chasing fame and easy profits.
Dangerous interactions between herbs and medications
Pharmacist Dr. Hussein Al-Raddadi believes that the actions of folk doctors pose a significant health risk. These individuals lack the scientific knowledge or medical experience necessary to provide reliable health consultations or effective treatments. The danger to patients' health lies in the folk recipes or herbs promoted by these practitioners, which may contain unknown substances or harmful compounds that lead to negative interactions with medications patients may be taking or cause new diseases due to their non-compliance with health standards, worsening their health condition and making recovery more difficult due to the aggravation of diseases.
Al-Raddadi added that these individuals do not stop draining patients' pockets; they may also cause irreparable physical harm. The treatments promoted do not undergo any precise scientific studies, meaning there is no guarantee of their effectiveness or safety. What these individuals do by requesting medical reports and tests from patients is part of their attempts to gain trust and make money through illegal means. In reality, this behavior contributes to misleading patients and undermining their trust in accredited specialists. Dr. Al-Raddadi urged the community to increase awareness of the dangers of folk medicine and ensure that treatment is obtained from reliable and specialized sources. Patients should avoid resorting to non-specialists, even if they appear trustworthy, and should consult accredited doctors and specialists in the medical field, emphasizing that patients must be cautious of unreliable information circulated on the internet.
Clinics on “TikTok”
Crime and intellectual security researcher Dr. Abdulrahman Abdulhamid Al-Sumairi stated that Saudi society is one of the most technology- and digital information-savvy communities, with TikTok being one of the most widely used platforms. Through it, some individuals market medical products and dietary supplements under the pretext of sharing their experiences with these medications and recommending their use, claiming they are tried and beneficial. These products do not have a scientific source, their side effects are unknown, and they are not licensed by the Food and Drug Authority. These promoters ignore that a medication suitable for one condition may not be suitable for another, resulting in serious diseases such as kidney failure and other chronic illnesses, making users victims of these false campaigns. Furthermore, they exploit patients' money through electronic fraud via points of sale and unreliable information during buying and selling, using their location and banking information, illegally accessing their accounts, and threatening and extorting them. Al-Sumairi added that such cases are considered illicit gains and are electronic crimes that threaten community and economic security. To combat electronic fraud, the government has enacted several strict penalties by establishing numerous laws and regulations to combat information crimes and prevent them. There must be community awareness and immediate reporting through organized channels of any videos that harm human health and community safety, along with strict monitoring of points of sale, storage, and distribution within the country, as community security is everyone's responsibility.
The patient has the right to seek compensation
Lawyer Nada Abdullah Al-Otaibi urged awareness that folk medicine is based on varying experiences and practices that are not based on proven studies, meaning that the margin for error and harm is significant and often comes from trials that may succeed or fail, and people engage in it out of ignorance. Consequently, some fraudsters, hiding their deception under the title of "folk doctor," exploit patients by misleading them into thinking they can treat them and relieve them of psychological or physical ailments, exposing the patient to financial exploitation and the risk of worsening their medical condition to the point where treatment with a specialist becomes ineffective.
Al-Otaibi added that folk medicine has become a thriving market for selling illusions and defrauding people, making those who practice it legally responsible for practicing medicine without knowledge and with premeditated ignorance. Islamic law preceded modern legal statutes in establishing the principles of medical liability that ensure the protection of the doctor and safeguard the rights of the patient, encouraging the development of a scientific approach to the medical profession. The Saudi regulator in the Civil Transactions Law stipulates compensation for harmful acts in Articles (137/138), which state that the damage for which the responsible party is obligated to compensate is determined by the extent of the loss incurred by the victim and the profit they missed if it is a natural result of the harmful act. It is also considered if the victim could not avoid it by exerting reasonable effort required by the circumstances of the case from the average person, and compensation for the harmful act includes compensation for moral damage. Moral damage includes what a natural person suffers from physical or psychological harm due to the infringement of their body, freedom, honor, reputation, or social status. The right to compensation for moral damage does not transfer to others unless its value is determined by a regulatory text, agreement, or judicial ruling. The court assesses the moral damage suffered by the victim, taking into account the type and nature of the moral damage and the person of the victim.
Magic treatment... fraud and deception
Writer Aydh Al-Mutairi believes that with the spread of social media, a group of healers periodically emerges, claiming to possess cures for physical and spiritual ailments through unproven and unregulated methods, exploiting patients' needs and their lack of awareness. These individuals are not seeking treatment as much as they are pursuing profit, selling illusions under the guise of folk medicine, and offering recipes that may be dangerous, without the slightest responsibility or religious deterrent to prevent them from cheating and deceiving. They claim to have a magical cure for every ailment and every chronic disease that modern medicine has failed to address, while in reality, they endanger people's health and lives and undermine the efforts of the Ministry of Health and its treatment plans for patients. Al-Mutairi added that it is essential for the community and relevant authorities to confront these individuals firmly, as awareness is the primary weapon to combat the exploitation of the vulnerable. There must be an increase in public awareness through an intensive educational campaign adopted by the Ministry of Health and the Food and Drug Authority to clarify the dangers of resorting to these charlatans, alongside the role of the Ministry of Islamic Affairs in dedicating Friday sermons to warn against them and the consequences of visiting them. Additionally, relevant authorities should impose strict oversight and harsh penalties to prevent the spread of this phenomenon, as human health is not a field for experiments, and silence about these individuals means allowing them to continue exploiting people without deterrent.
