The "Binance" platform, the largest cryptocurrency exchange in the world, has witnessed a significant wave of digital asset withdrawals, amounting to approximately $3.64 billion, equivalent to 2.1% of its total assets, following the resumption of its services after suffering a massive security breach that resulted in the theft of cryptocurrencies worth $6.3 billion last week.
The platform rushed to reassure investors and participants in the cryptocurrency market, confirming that withdrawal operations began to stabilize after the initial spike that followed the incident, while deposit volumes remained at levels described as "large," in an attempt to contain concerns about the platform's ability to meet its obligations and maintain customer trust.
The volume of withdrawals is seen as an early test of the extent of user confidence in "Binance" following the breach, especially since the incident is classified, according to analysts' estimates, among the largest financial thefts ever witnessed globally.
Limited recovery for cryptocurrencies after the downturn
In terms of trading, major cryptocurrencies recorded a limited recovery over the weekend after dropping to low levels.
The "Bitcoin" currency slightly rebounded after falling to its lowest level in six weeks on Friday, trading above the $78,000 mark on Monday.
The "Ethereum" currency also regained part of its losses after hitting a two-month low on Friday, rising to around $2,287.
The "Binance" platform allows its users to buy, sell, and trade digital assets, with approximately 335 million registered users worldwide. The platform had announced that its total managed assets reached $171 billion as of October 28.
Billions of dollars leaving the platform amid investor fears
The recent withdrawals come at a time when the cryptocurrency sector is experiencing a series of hacks and cyberattacks. According to data from "TRM Labs," a company specializing in blockchain transaction analysis, hackers seized cryptocurrencies worth $2.9 billion over the past year through nearly 150 separate incidents.
In another indicator of the cautious state prevailing in the markets, the total market capitalization of the two largest stablecoins, "Tether" (USDT) and "USD Coin" (USDC), declined by about $1.2 billion since Friday, according to data from "CoinMarketCap."
Stablecoins are an important indicator of liquidity movement within the digital asset market, as a decline in their market value can reflect capital exiting this sector.
For his part, Ari Redbord, the global head of policy at "TRM Labs," stated that Bitcoin exchange-traded funds recorded net outflows of $643 million on Friday, marking the largest daily outflow in October, coinciding with the liquidation of leveraged investment positions exceeding $1.3 billion.
Redbord added that the incident raises concerns among more conservative institutional investors, explaining that a breach of a traditional financial institution could lead to the theft of usernames and passwords, while a breach of a cryptocurrency platform could result in the rapid theft of financial assets on a large scale, creating a high level of risk for institutions managing other people's money.
"Binance": Covering 95% of stolen assets
In an attempt to contain the fallout from the breach, "Binance" announced that it had managed to provide approximately $6 billion in cryptocurrencies to compensate for the stolen assets by using its own funds to purchase alternative tokens.
It clarified that the remaining 5% consists of less liquid digital assets, which may make the process of securing and replacing them take longer.
The platform also confirmed that the resumption of withdrawal operations is taking place gradually, prioritizing the most requested currencies by users based on transaction data from the past week.
The first phase included 15 currencies and digital tokens, including "Bitcoin" and "Ethereum," along with some stablecoins linked to "USDC" and "USDT" and the "Dogecoin" currency.
The platform stated in a previous post on its "X" account that it is following a phased approach to resume withdrawals, confirming that market conditions are stable.
It added that net outflows reflect the difference between the funds withdrawn by customers and the funds they deposited following the incident.
Discrepancies in estimates of the amount of outgoing funds
In contrast, data from the cryptocurrency analysis platform "DefiLlama" showed that the volume of outflows from "Binance" reached approximately $5.81 billion, compared to a previous estimate of $4.36 billion.
"Binance" did not provide an immediate comment on the updated figures, but it had previously reserved its comments on the platform's initial estimates, clarifying that the data does not include transfers made to deposit assets into its new hot wallet, and thus does not accurately reflect the total movement of funds.
A spokesperson for "Binance" confirmed that the latest data published by the company via "X" is the closest to the actual figures, taking into account the movements that occurred in deposits and withdrawals since that data was published.
Investors turning to diversify asset holdings
Despite the platform's assurances regarding compensating for most of the stolen assets and the stability of withdrawal operations, some investors have begun to review their risk management strategies and reduce reliance on a single platform.
FBI accuses North Korean group
In a significant development, the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) announced last Saturday that a hacking group linked to North Korea, known as "TraderTraitor," is behind the attack targeting "Binance."
The bureau explained that law enforcement agencies monitored members of the group converting the stolen assets into "Ethereum," indicating expectations of continued money laundering using techniques and tools associated with cryptocurrencies.
These accusations come amid previous allegations against North Korean entities of being involved in hacking and stealing digital assets to obtain illicit funding sources, allegations that Pyongyang has denied for years.
According to the blockchain transaction analysis firms "TRM Labs" and "Chainalysis," the bulk of the theft occurred within about 20 minutes, starting from late Thursday, with similarities observed between the attack and previous major cyberattacks attributed to entities linked to North Korea.
Trump: We don't know if North Korea is involved
In contrast, U.S. President Donald Trump stated in remarks to reporters on Saturday that North Korea's involvement in the attack has not been confirmed yet.
Trump added, "We don't know if North Korea is behind it, but if they are involved, we will talk to them about it," according to statements published by a White House-affiliated account on "X."
These developments place the "Binance" platform in front of an important test to regain investor confidence, at a time when fears are increasing regarding the security of cryptocurrency trading platforms and their ability to protect customer assets from cyberattacks, amid anticipation of the implications of the breach on liquidity movement and cryptocurrency prices in the upcoming period.
