Gold prices increased today, as oil prices declined after U.S. President Donald Trump canceled plans for a new attack on Iran in hopes of reaching a quick agreement, easing some concerns about inflation and interest rate hikes.
Gold rose in spot transactions by 0.7% to $4,067.06 per ounce by 00:23 GMT. U.S. gold futures also increased by 0.9% to $4,065.60 per ounce, according to the Al Arabiya news channel.
Interest Rate Pressures
Gold has faced pressure since the beginning of the conflict between the U.S. and Iran, as the inflation caused by the war could prompt central banks to raise interest rates. Although gold is traditionally viewed as a hedge against inflation, its appeal tends to diminish in an environment of rising interest rates since it does not yield any returns.
Three officials from the Federal Reserve (the U.S. central bank), who opposed last week's monetary policy meeting decision in favor of raising interest rates, expressed concern that inflation will remain stuck above the Fed's 2% target, a level it has maintained for over five years, unless short-term borrowing costs are raised immediately.
