The prices of European wheat declined during today's trading as traders assessed the implications of the reciprocal attacks between Russia and Ukraine on ports and shipping in the Black Sea, amid indications that the main grain export facilities in both countries have not suffered significant damage.
The September delivery contract for milling wheat on the Euronext exchange in Paris fell by 0.7% to 231 euros ($262.6239) per ton, after a volatile performance during the session.
Erosion of Gains
Price pressure also came from a nearly 6% drop in oil following the cessation of reciprocal strikes between the United States and Iran over the weekend, alongside a decline in wheat prices on the Chicago exchange. In the Russian export market, prices for new wheat containing 12.5% protein for delivery in the second half of August stabilized at around $235 per ton, after a previous surge, with price gains eroded by rising shipping costs.
Highest Level
Global wheat prices rose to their highest level in nearly two years during April, as drought in the United States pressured crops at a time when high fertilizer costs prompted farmers to reduce the planting of nutrient-intensive crops, such as grains.
Futures contracts for soft red winter wheat in Chicago rose by up to 4.1%, reaching their highest level since June 2024, amid a lack of signs of improvement in the condition of wheat fields in the U.S. plains that were planted last fall and have begun to wither due to a lack of rainfall.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture recently kept crop ratings unchanged at only 30% classified as good or excellent, despite an increase in the percentage of wheat rated poor or very poor.
