Japanese Prime Minister Sanai Takahashi defended her government's economic policies, calling for an end to the strict fiscal policy that has lasted for years, and for enhancing domestic investment to return the Japanese economy to a path of sustainable growth, at a time when her government faces a decline in approval ratings due to rising living costs.
Embracing Challenges
Takahashi stated in her remarks: "Delaying investment will weaken Japanese technology, human capabilities, and the country's industrial base," warning of the loss of growth opportunities if decisive steps are not taken at this time. She added: "A country that does not embrace challenges has no future, and a policy that merely protects the status quo cannot create hope," emphasizing the necessity of moving quickly to exit the phase of fiscal austerity and enhance domestic investment to support the economy.
Assessing the Situation
The Prime Minister indicated that her government will adopt a "responsible and proactive" fiscal policy, while maintaining transparent and thoughtful communication with financial markets to enhance confidence in Japan's financial situation. In her assessment of the economic situation, Takahashi explained that the Japanese economy is experiencing a gradual recovery, but it is still too early to definitively say it has fully emerged from recession or that the risk of returning to it has disappeared. She also confirmed that the government is closely monitoring the repercussions of the conflict in the Middle East, noting the need to assess its potential impact on Japan's real economy. This comes at a time when Takahashi's government's popularity has dropped below 60% for the first time since she took office, amid increasing pressures resulting from rising living costs.
