U.S. President Donald Trump renewed his call for the Federal Reserve to lower interest rates, considering that the United States should enjoy the lowest borrowing costs in the world. Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One today: "Interest rates should be lowered."
He pointed out that there are countries paying lower interest rates than the United States, adding: "We should have the lowest rate in the world."
Markets Await
Trump referred to Federal Reserve Chairman Kevin Warsh, saying he is "great," but noted that the central bank's board members are "very political," adding that he knows "what Warsh wants to do." It is worth mentioning that global markets are awaiting this week's meeting of the U.S. Federal Reserve, as investors face a decision that is difficult to predict; will the Fed raise interest rates to combat inflation risks, or will it choose to wait after the latest data showed a calm in price pressures?
Energy Rise
According to the Wall Street Journal and what was published by Al Arabiya, officials in the previous meeting were almost evenly divided; one team believes that raising interest rates may become necessary during the year, while another team thinks that the current policy is sufficient. According to the newspaper, the decision has become more complicated, as any new wave of rising energy prices could make overall inflation more stubborn, while core inflation remains at 2.6%, which is above the Fed's target of 2%.
Reassessments
According to what was published by Al Arabiya, markets have started to reassess, as expectations for an interest rate hike in the meeting on July 28 and 29 have risen to about 40%, compared to only about 10% just days ago. However, these figures do not capture all the uncertainty, as there is another factor; the new Fed Chairman Kevin Warsh, who speaks firmly about the need to restore price stability, has not yet clarified whether he believes this requires an immediate rate hike or waiting. This makes Wednesday's meeting different, as raising rates would send a clear message that the Fed is ready to act quickly in the face of any new inflation threat, while holding rates steady would not end the debate but could simply postpone it until next September.
