The U.S. stocks deepened their losses during today's trading, with the Dow Jones index losing 580 points. This comes amid rising tensions in the Middle East and increasing oil prices, along with growing concerns about the significant spending on artificial intelligence following the earnings results of Alphabet and Tesla.
The main pressures on Wall Street were due to a decline in Alphabet's stock after its owner Google raised its capital expenditure forecasts for this year, and Tesla's stock fell after reporting earnings below expectations and expenses rising faster than revenues.
Market Pressures
Oil prices increased the pressures on the markets after Brent crude surpassed the $100 per barrel mark, amid rising navigation risks in the Middle East and escalating mutual threats between Washington and Tehran. Additionally, the yield on the 10-year U.S. Treasury bonds rose to its highest level since January 2025, driven by market bets on monetary tightening by the Federal Reserve starting next September, following a potential interest rate hold at next week's meeting.
New Tariffs
On another note, White House spokesperson Caroline Levitt announced that U.S. Trade Representative Jameson Greer will announce a new package of tariffs later today. This comes after the U.S. Supreme Court rejected President Donald Trump's use of economic emergency powers to impose broad tariffs on imports in February; prompting the U.S. administration to implement global tariffs of 10% under Section 122 of the Trade Act of 1974, which expires tomorrow. Following the Supreme Court's decision, Greer launched a series of investigations in March under Section 301 of the same law, allowing the U.S. administration to impose new tariffs that could replace the current ones.
