The International Energy Agency is holding an emergency meeting for its member countries to discuss the possibility of releasing part of the strategic oil reserves, in an attempt to address supply disruptions resulting from the war with Iran.

The agency's executive director, Fatih Birol, stated in a statement on Tuesday: "More than 30 countries will assess supply security and current market conditions before making a decision on withdrawing from emergency stocks if necessary."

He added: "Energy ministers from the Group of Seven met earlier today to discuss available options to address supply disruptions and requested the agency to prepare scenarios for withdrawals from reserves in emergency situations."

Advantages and Disadvantages

For his part, French Finance Minister Roland Lescure confirmed to reporters in Paris that the group of countries is ready to withdraw from reserves when needed, and that they have tasked the International Energy Agency with studying the quantities that can be released.

Meanwhile, EU Energy Commissioner Dan Jørgensen mentioned that the agency will provide an assessment today of the advantages and disadvantages of withdrawing from emergency oil reserves at this time.
