أعلن نائب الرئيس الأمريكي جيه. دي فانس، اليوم (الأحد)، أن «أوروبا حليف مهم للولايات المتحدة، لكن بالطبع لدينا بعض الخلافات، كما يحدث بين الأصدقاء أحيانا، حول قضايا مثل التجارة».
وأضاف فانس خلال جلوسه إلى جانب رئيسة المفوضية الأوروبية فون دير لاين ورئيسة الوزراء الإيطالية جورجا ميلوني في روما بعد أن حضروا جميعاً قداس تنصيب البابا ليو بابا الفاتيكان: «أعتقد أننا سنجري محادثة رائعة، وآمل أن تكون بداية لبعض المفاوضات التجارية وبعض المزايا التجارية طويلة الأمد بين كل من أوروبا والولايات المتحدة».
يذكر أن دير لاين قالت أخيراً، في مقابلة مع صحيفة «فاينانشال تايمز» البريطانية، أنها تدرس فرض رسوم جمركية على شركات التكنولوجيا الأمريكية العملاقة مثل «ميتا» أو «قوقل».
وأوقفت الولايات المتحدة والاتحاد الأوروبي زيادات الضرائب على الواردات المخطط لها للسماح بالمفاوضات، لكن بروكسل تستعد لاحتمال فشل الجهود الدبلوماسية في حل النزاع التجاري الذي أشعلته إدارة ترمب.
وقالت فون دير لاين للصحيفة إنه إذا لم تمضِ المفاوضات قدماً بأسلوب مرضٍ، فهناك مجموعة واسعة من الإجراءات المضادة المتاحة للاتحاد الأوروبي.
وكان فانس، التقى مع رئيسة المفوضية الأوروبية أورسولا فون دير لاين، ورئيسة الوزراء الإيطالية جورجا ميلوني، وقال إنه يأمل في أن يسهم لقاؤهما في دفع المحادثات التجارية بين الاتحاد الأوروبي والولايات المتحدة إلى الأمام.

U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance announced today (Sunday) that "Europe is an important ally of the United States, but of course we have some disagreements, as happens among friends sometimes, on issues like trade."
Vance added while sitting alongside European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni in Rome after they all attended the inauguration mass of Pope Leo at the Vatican: "I believe we will have a wonderful conversation, and I hope it will be the beginning of some trade negotiations and some long-term trade benefits between both Europe and the United States."
It is worth mentioning that von der Leyen recently stated in an interview with the British newspaper "Financial Times" that she is considering imposing tariffs on giant American tech companies like "Meta" or "Google."
The United States and the European Union halted planned import tax increases to allow for negotiations, but Brussels is preparing for the possibility of diplomatic efforts failing to resolve the trade dispute ignited by the Trump administration.
Von der Leyen told the newspaper that if the negotiations do not proceed satisfactorily, there is a wide range of countermeasures available to the European Union.
