It is striking to the observer of the cultural scene in our Arab world the diversity of intellectuals; between those who live for themselves, and those who dedicate their being and efforts to various causes, and between those who try to combine a cause they defend and hold onto, while granting themselves their right to enjoyment, comfort, and pleasure.
In this regard, cultural critic Dr. Abdullah Al-Ghadhami emphasized that the issue does not fall under the title of what is presumed, nor the title of obligation or recommendation, but is greater than all these assumptions. A being without a cause will not be a sound being; rather, it is an absurd being and an appendage—according to medical terminology—pointing out that any human needs motivation through forms of what is necessary and what is recommended. They will not truly be an intellectual, nor will they be an employee deserving of their salary, nor will they be a farmer whose land yields fruit unless they are a person with a cause. The cultural critic stated: You and I are children of a generation that were farmers or merchants, and these are two of the most profound human professions. A farmer and a merchant only succeed because they are people with a cause, the least of which is to live a decent life for themselves and their families; to avoid falling into the realm of need. He added: Woe to any intellectual who claims the attribute of being cultured if they require reminders of what is necessary and what is recommended. He further stated: Yes, there are hedonists who live for pleasure, caring for nothing but their own enjoyment, but these are not a measure for any meaning, and they remain subjects of research and contemplation as they are not sound.
