Ghaitha Al-Alaki, the wife of Moroccan artist Saad Lamjarred, sparked widespread controversy after discussing "financial negotiations" that she claimed the family was subjected to in exchange for not sending her husband back to prison, following the issuance of the appellate ruling in France sentencing him to ten years in prison.
Al-Alaki explained that the family, according to her account, received explicit financial demands in exchange for not enforcing the custody order, emphasizing that Lamjarred's family rejected those demands. She added that the defense team presented documents that she said demonstrate attempts to link freedom to a financial payment, questioning the concept of justice in light of these facts.
Lamjarred's wife stated: "We were told clearly: if we don't pay, he will go back to prison. We did not pay, and today he is behind bars." She pointed out that her husband had adhered to judicial supervision for years, returning to France whenever the authorities allowed him to travel, affirming that he remained steadfast in his position in the case.
In another aspect, Al-Alaki spoke about her relationship with her husband, noting that she knows his character away from the spotlight, describing his kindness, patience, loyalty, and commitment to supporting others. She confirmed her continued support for him during the upcoming legal phase, stating that the ruling does not change her stance towards him. She also sent a message to his critics, urging them not to turn the case into a space for mockery or gloating, saying: "You may know a headline in the news, but you do not know our nights and our tears... Remember that behind the headlines are human beings and a family in pain."
Her statements came after the ruling issued on September 26, 2026, by the Court of Appeals in Créteil (southeast of Paris), sentencing Lamjarred to ten years in prison with immediate enforcement, following the appeal of the initial ruling that sentenced him to six years, while the public prosecutor requested an eight-year sentence during the appeal phase.
The defense team announced its intention to appeal to the French Court of Cassation, considering it the next legal step in a case that continues to attract widespread interest in Morocco and the Arab world.
