The artist Manal Bahanshal presented a collection of artworks titled "Homeland Collection" at the art exhibition "Homeland 2025" in Riyadh, embodying symbols of national identity through the medium of sand as the memory and voice of the earth.
The collection included three main paintings: "Oil Arteries," which expressed oil as a lifeline where the stability of the earth intersects with the power of energy; "Pillars of the Homeland," which represented the thirteen regions of the Kingdom with sand columns of varying heights unified by a single base symbolizing roots; and "Melody of the Homeland," which embodies the unity of the Saudi people in a visual sandy harmony against a black background.
Bahanshal, born in Jeddah in 1979, serves as the director of the historical museum at King Abdulaziz University and holds two master's degrees in Islamic arts and in the examination and appraisal of antiques from King Abdulaziz University and the University of Nevada, USA.
She has participated in several international exhibitions, including World Art Dubai and Artists of the Kasbah in Spain, and has received the first-place award from the British Council. She founded the Manal Arts Center to empower Saudi women artistically and train over 1,500 female artists.
Bahanshal believes that art is "the memory of the homeland when told through sand," and that when a painting touches the earth, it becomes more truthful and eternal.
