تمّ انتخاب الرئيس السادس عشر للجامعة الأمريكية في بيروت لبنان وقبرص، الدكتور فضلو خوري، زميلًا في «الأكاديمية الأمريكية للفنون والعلوم»، عن فئة القيادة التعليمية والأكاديمية، ليندرج بذلك ضمن قائمة الشخصيات العالمية المؤثّرة.
وتُعتبر «الأكاديمية الأمريكية للفنون والعلوم» التي تأسّست في العام 1780، محفلًا علميًّا وصرحًا بحثيًّا يتّسم بالعراقة والتميّز، بحيث يجمع روّاد العالم الاستثنائيّين المشهود بإمكاناتهم وخبراتهم في مختلف المهن والتخصّصات، والذين تمكّنوا من إحداث الفرق في حياة الشعوب والمجتمعات في المجالات العلمية والأدبية والثقافية والفكرية.
ونشأت الأكاديمية على يد جون آدامز، الذي شغل منصب الرئيس الثاني للولايات المتحدة الأمريكية وأول نائبٍ للرئيس، إلى جانب السياسي والمفكر الأمريكي البارز جيمس بُودوين، ورجل الدولة الأمريكي جون هانكوك، وآخرين. أمّا الكوكبة الأولى من زملاء الأكاديمية، فشملت أحد الآباء المؤسّسين للولايات المتحدة الأمريكية بنجامين فرانكلين، وأول رئيس للولايات المتحدة الأمريكية جورج واشنطن.
يشكّل انضمام رئيس الجامعة الأمريكية في بيروت إلى «الأكاديمية الأمريكية للفنون والعلوم»، شهادة فخريّة تُضاف إلى مسيرته الأكاديمية والمهنية، لمساهمته في تطوير وتحديث أنظمة التعليم والسياسات وقيادته في زمن الأزمات.
وفي سياق تعقيبه على الحدث، أشاد رئيس مجلس أمناء الجامعة الأمريكية في بيروت عبدو قديفة، بالدكتور فضلو خوري الذي برز قائدًا متميّزًا منذ توليه منصبه في العام 2015. فتمكّن بفضل قيادته الحكيمة من تذليل العقبات والتحديات، إن لناحية تداعيات الأزمة الاقتصادية في لبنان وانفجار مرفأ بيروت في الرابع من أغسطس 2020، أو لجهة مضاعفات جائحة «كوفيد – 19». وبالتزامن، حقّق الدكتور خوري إنجازات بارزة، بينها إعادة العمل بالحيازة الأكاديمية، إطلاق المنصّة الإلكترونيّة للجامعة (AUB Online)، وافتتاح «الجامعة الأميركية في بيروت - مديترانيو»، وهي أول حرم توأم للجامعة خارج لبنان. هذا، وساهمت قيادته في تعزيز السمعة العالمية للجامعة، فكان أن سجّلت ارتفاعًا لافتًا ضمن التصنيف العالمي. ورأى قديفة أنّ «انتخاب الدكتور خوري يُعدّ شهادة على التزامه الثابت بالممتازيّة الأكاديمية والقيادة المبتكرة وتطوير المجتمع من خلال البحوث والتعليم».
وأعرب الدكتور خوري عن اعتزازه وتقديره للرئيس الفخري لمجلس أمناء الجامعة الأمريكية في بيروت فيليب خوري، الذي رشّحه لهذه العضوية، استنادًا إلى عملهما المشترك مع جميع المعنيّين في الجامعة خلال العقد الماضي. وتابع: «اختياري اليوم إلى جانب كوكبة من القادة والروّاد العالميّين، يشعرني بالفخر والامتنان. وممّا لا شك فيه أن فرحة والدتي عظيمة كوني انتُخبت ضمن عداد نخبةٍ سبق أن اختارت بين صفوفها غلوريا ستاينم، الأيقونة النسوية والناشطة الأمريكية الجريئة».
ورأت لوري باتون، رئيسة «الأكاديمية الأمريكية للفنون والعلوم»، أنّ «إنجازات الزملاء الجُدُد تجسّد بتنوّعها القدرة البشرية على الاكتشاف والإبداع والقيادة والمثابرة. إنّهم شهادة صارخة تؤكّد قوة المعرفة وقدرتها على توسيع آفاقنا وتعميق فهمنا وإدراكنا. لذلك، ندعو كل زميل جديد للاحتفاء بإنجازاته ومؤازرة الأكاديمية في تعزيز المصلحة العامة».
تأسّست الجامعة الأمريكية في بيروت في العام 1866وترتكز فلسفتها التعليمية ومعاييرها وممارساتها على النموذج الأميركي الليبرالي للتعليم العالي. والجامعة الأمريكية في بيروت هي جامعة بحثية أساسها التعليم. وهيئتها التعليمية تضم أكثر من 790 أستاذًا متفرّغًا، أما جسمها الطلابي فيتشكّل من أكثر من 9,000 طالب. وتقدم الجامعة الأمريكية في بيروت حاليًّا أكثر من 140 برنامجًا للحصول على شهادات البكالوريوس والماجستير والدكتوراه. وهي توفّر التعليم والتدريب الطبيّين للطلاب من كل أنحاء المنطقة في مركزها الطبي الذي يضم مستشفى كامل الخدمات يضم أكثر من 320 سريرًا.
The sixteenth president of the American University of Beirut, Lebanon and Cyprus, Dr. Fadlo Khuri, has been elected as a fellow of the "American Academy of Arts and Sciences," in the category of educational and academic leadership, thus joining the ranks of influential global figures.
The "American Academy of Arts and Sciences," founded in 1780, is a prestigious scientific and research institution known for its excellence, bringing together exceptional leaders recognized for their capabilities and experiences across various professions and disciplines, who have made a difference in the lives of peoples and communities in scientific, literary, cultural, and intellectual fields.
The academy was established by John Adams, who served as the second president of the United States and the first vice president, alongside prominent American politician and thinker James Bowdoin, statesman John Hancock, and others. The first cohort of academy fellows included one of the founding fathers of the United States, Benjamin Franklin, and the first president of the United States, George Washington.
Dr. Khuri's membership in the "American Academy of Arts and Sciences" represents an honorary recognition added to his academic and professional journey, acknowledging his contributions to the development and modernization of educational systems and policies, and his leadership during times of crisis.
In his remarks on the event, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the American University of Beirut, Abdo Khoury, praised Dr. Fadlo Khuri, who has stood out as an exceptional leader since taking office in 2015. Thanks to his wise leadership, he has been able to overcome obstacles and challenges, whether related to the repercussions of the economic crisis in Lebanon and the Beirut port explosion on August 4, 2020, or the implications of the COVID-19 pandemic. Simultaneously, Dr. Khuri achieved notable accomplishments, including the reinstatement of academic tenure, the launch of the university's online platform (AUB Online), and the opening of "The American University of Beirut - Mediterranean," which is the first twin campus of the university outside Lebanon. His leadership has contributed to enhancing the university's global reputation, resulting in a significant rise in global rankings. Khoury noted that "Dr. Khuri's election is a testament to his unwavering commitment to academic excellence, innovative leadership, and community development through research and education."
Dr. Khuri expressed his pride and appreciation to the honorary chairman of the Board of Trustees of the American University of Beirut, Philip Khuri, who nominated him for this membership, based on their joint work with all stakeholders at the university over the past decade. He continued, "My selection today alongside a group of global leaders and pioneers fills me with pride and gratitude. There is no doubt that my mother's joy is immense as I have been elected among an elite group that previously included Gloria Steinem, the bold American feminist icon and activist."
