The voices of the residents in the villages of Bani Dhubyan in the Al-Baha region have echoed for more than 20 years, demanding the establishment of a hospital to serve over 80,000 people and put an end to their daily suffering due to the nearest hospital being more than 25 kilometers away; a situation that makes transporting emergency cases fraught with danger and exacerbates the suffering of the elderly, women, and children.
The residents whom "Okaz" met did not stop at mere demands; they have taken the initiative for years by offering a legally certified piece of land to serve as the site for the hospital. Official letters were issued by the Ministry of Municipal and Rural Affairs (formerly) to allocate the land for the Ministry of Health, and the project has been included multiple times in the five-year plans of the Ministry of Health and within proposed budgets exceeding 70 million riyals, yet the implementation has remained postponed.
The documents held by the residents, which "Okaz" reviewed, reveal a long history of correspondence between the regional council, the Ministry of Health, and the Emirate of Al-Baha, all confirming the need for a 100-bed hospital in Bani Dhubyan that provides diagnostic and therapeutic services and alleviates the burden on small health centers that do not meet the needs of the population.
The residents of Bani Dhubyan, including Mohammed Al-Ghamdi, Saleh bin Abdullah, and Saeed Al-Zahrani, say that their suffering does not stop at the distance; it extends to the mountainous nature of the road and the frequency of traffic accidents, making the absence of a hospital a direct threat to people's lives, especially in urgent cases such as childbirth, cardiac incidents, and bleeding.
In this context, the village chief of Al-Hisan, Khadr Saeed Al-Khadr, proposed utilizing the building of the Bani Dhubyan Quran memorization school, which has been neglected for years, and converting it into a hospital to serve the villages after preparing and equipping it with medical supplies. He indicated that he believes the Ministry of Education would not mind utilizing vacant buildings for other sectors, calling on the Ministry of Health to adopt this temporary solution until the project is fully approved, especially since it consists of three floors with its benefits and a large courtyard. Mohammed bin Ali Sanqour from the village of Al-Raihan also confirmed that the hospital represents an utmost necessity for the region. He added that having a fully equipped hospital would not only reflect positively on people's health but would also contribute to improving the quality of life and ease the burdens on families, pointing out that the people of the region have done what they can by allocating the land and official documents, and it remains for the concerned authorities to fulfill their commitments to the citizens. This has led the residents to once again urge the Ministry of Health to expedite the approval and implementation of the project. The residents confirmed that the proposal to convert the school into a hospital meets the needs of the villages and hoped that the relevant authorities would consider their suggestion.
