There are students entering university who suffer from a weakness in English. When one of them enrolls in a university major where English is essential, they discover their inability to complete the major, even though these students studied English in the stages prior to university, and some of them had their families bear the burden of the costs of enrolling them in language education centers.
The problem is not in the few years of study after English was adopted since the first grade of elementary school, but there are fundamental reasons that go beyond the form and content of the curriculum, the most prominent of which are:
First: The focus on the theoretical aspect; priority is given in classrooms when teaching English to memorizing rules and passing written tests, while practical training on listening and actual speaking skills that mimic daily life is neglected, in addition to the lack of audio labs in schools to learn listening in the native English language.
Second: The classroom environment and overcrowding; classrooms often suffer from high student numbers, which reduces the opportunity for individual practice and direct interaction with the teacher in English, as the teacher cannot take individual differences into account and ensure that each student is trained and their weaknesses addressed.
Third: Teacher development; English language teachers should be enrolled in international external courses to develop their skills and enhance their efficiency through direct interaction with native English speakers.
Fourth: The nature of school assessment; tests often rely on memorization and written assessments and numerous rules, which do not reflect the student's true ability to communicate live and perform in daily life. Therefore, there should be an increase in classes dedicated solely to speaking and practical practice of various units of the curriculum.
Fifth: Limited real-world usage; the practice of the language is often confined to the walls of the classroom, due to the lack of an surrounding environment that supports its use in daily life or extracurricular activities. Activating English Language Day is important and may extend for a week, including morning programs and even role-playing situations through student theater.
Sixth: Weak self-motivation; some students do not realize the practical importance of the language until later stages, which negatively affects their seriousness in learning and interest in developing skills. Increasing motivation and rewards may be important at this stage.
Highlight:
Developing the curriculum alone is not enough unless accompanied by a change in teaching methods, activating the interactive environment, and updating assessment tools to focus on the actual communicative competence of the language, in a way that serves the interests of the student and the satisfaction of the family.
