Not everything that happens inside our bodies comes with an early warning; blood pressure or blood sugar levels may rise without clear symptoms, and lung function may decline before the patient notices it.
When it comes to "smoking," nicotine reaches the brain quickly, making the smoker feel relaxed and in a better mood, but as its effects wear off, the desire to smoke returns, and this is what they feel immediately.
The harms of smoking do not necessarily begin with pain; rather, they accumulate over years before becoming apparent. A smoker may not have any complaints for years, and during this time, they feel healthy, which leads them to declare to those around them: "I'm fine, my health is great." This feeling does not reveal what is happening inside their body, but tests, scans, and lung function tests uncover what they may not have felt. For example, when they experience a cough or find it harder to climb stairs, they may not pay attention to it, having grown accustomed to it over time. Therefore, do not let feelings alone guide you to believe that everything is fine.
Here are some statements that smokers deceive themselves with, such as: "I can quit smoking whenever I decide," "I enjoy smoking," and quitting smoking is not a test of willpower. Specialized support and cessation aids increase the chances of success, and an unsuccessful attempt may help in planning the next one.
Before the tests reveal what has been unnoticed, the question remains: Am I really okay?
