One of the fortunate coincidences that occurred in my life is the beautiful alignment between the approval of the Council of Ministers in its last session on Tuesday, July 28, 2026, to designate the year 2027 as the "Year of Water," and my project that I recently started to prepare a scientific book specialized in "Water Science," based on the opinions of esteemed professors in various fields related to water, from whom I have learned, such as Professor Mohammed Qari, Professor Mohammed Khateeb, and Dr. Hassan Saleem.
Simultaneously with the announcement of 2027 as the Saudi Year of Water, the governors of the World Water Council chose our country to host the 11th World Water Forum 2027, under the slogan "Working for a Better Tomorrow" (Riyadh: March 21-25, 2027). This forum is held every three years and is considered the largest international gathering for the water sector, bringing together participants from various fields, multilateral institutions, academic circles, civil societies, and private sectors. These are two pioneering Saudi steps towards sustaining the quality of life encompassed in "Vision 2030," and our experience in nurturing "food security," highlighting the priority of water as the essence of life.
When our country emphasizes the importance of "freshwater" for human life, it derives this role from our noble Sharia as a fundamental system of governance, especially since the Holy Quran mentions types of water in 23 instances, each with its own nature. Our country is rich in many high-level Saudi (hydrogeological) professionals specialized in studying surface and groundwater "Water Science," who have provided in-depth scientific research on groundwater sources, determining their quantity and quality, and assessing their suitability.
The global interest in water meets the needs of humanity for water, whether for drinking, irrigation, industry, and more, as water – as is known – covers 70% of the Earth's surface; of which 97% is saline water, meaning that only 3% of freshwater is suitable for use, part of which is in the form of snow, and another part is buried underground within water components, rivers, and valleys.
As for the human body, the percentage of water varies; it reaches 78% of body weight in newborns, 60% in adult men, and about 55% in women. On the other hand, the percentage in animal bodies is 60%, and in herbaceous plants, it is 95%.
I would like to point out – before concluding – that the rising groundwater levels worldwide have become a serious phenomenon that has drawn the attention of decision-makers in most countries, prompting some related sectors to study this phenomenon, which has led to the destruction of facilities, buildings, and roads, and altered the dynamics and properties of the soil.
How amazing it is that God is disobeyed, or how the denier denies Him, when in everything there is a sign that indicates He is One, as evidenced by His saying: "And We made from water every living thing."
