The Jordanian and Syrian armies gathered at the border, and war between the two countries was just a moment away from the first bullet being fired. People witnessed dozens of soldiers and tanks on high alert. This happened in 1980, two months after the start of the Iraq-Iran war, and we know that Syria under Hafez al-Assad sided with the Iranians, while Jordan sided with the Iraqis.
At that time, Prince Abdullah bin Abdulaziz, the second deputy and head of the National Guard, under the guidance of King Khalid, may God have mercy on them, undertook shuttle diplomacy between Damascus and Amman to spare the two Arab countries from a devastating battle. The task was not easy, but Saudi mediation succeeded in gradually de-escalating tensions and the gradual withdrawal of soldiers, culminating in the king's invitation to the leaders of both countries to visit Riyadh and break the deadlock between them.
This story is neither the first nor the last of Saudi initiatives to stem bloodshed and steer the region towards development. An initiative holds no value unless it involves parties that prioritize security and military solutions, which can be debated in relation to Iran's approach. Here, the importance of Saudi diplomacy emerges, convincing Tehran of what is inconsistent with its approach by highlighting commonalities and sparing peoples the horrors of war.
This was exemplified in the remarks of Prince Sultan bin Abdulaziz, may God have mercy on him, during his visit to Tehran in May 1999, when he stated that our economic and cultural cooperation should take precedence over our security cooperation. This statement carries greater weight coming from a statesman, especially one in the position of Minister of Defense, reminding us of the wisdom that says: Politicians lead to wars, while generals seek to avoid them.
Today, the visit of His Highness Minister of Defense Prince Khalid bin Salman, accompanied by the Chief of Army Staff of Pakistan and the head of Turkish intelligence, represents the three countries that are part of the Mecca Alliance. This visit carries many messages, foremost of which is a new vision for regional security through parties that have signed a mutual defense agreement, but the visit also expresses a vision of shared stability.
The visit aims to open a gap in the wall of obstinacy between the U.S. and Iran, and between Netanyahu's efforts to avoid accountability from the Israeli public regarding October 7 through further escalation and continued forward flight. The crisis, as we witness it, is not necessarily a disagreement over nuclear files or others; rather, it is rooted in a lack of trust and the inability to reach any agreement that both sides can market as a victory.
The visit is based on significant efforts by mediators Pakistan and Qatar, which have contributed to reducing the chances of collision between the conflicting parties. In my opinion, the visit represents a progressive step that does not symbolize mediation but rather embodies a shared vision for regional security—a vision that anticipates security stability through stability, which is the primary driver of economic prosperity.
Saudi diplomacy carries significant weight and influence in the major capitals of the world. It is a diplomacy that has organized its lines through closed-door meetings, avoiding noise. Diplomatic breakthroughs must occur with the highest levels of secrecy and through a party that has a record of reliability.
The parties to the conflict have been economically and militarily strained since February until today, and finding an exit that preserves face and represents a red carpet for descending from the tree is the ultimate goal, regardless of the presentation. This visit by His Highness the Minister of Defense is an important step in its symbolism and messages, which needs to be wisely received by the other party, prioritizing the interests of the peoples and the shared security of the region.
History teaches us the wisdom that "the strong is not the one who always wins the war, but the weak is the one who always loses peace."
