When representatives from Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, and Turkey sat down at the dialogue table in Tehran, the region was facing the possibility of a return to military escalation, and the opportunity for peace needed someone to protect it from collapse.
In my opinion, this is the angle that gives the meeting its significance: three countries linked by the Mecca Agreement for mutual defense are moving with their political and security weight to support de-escalation and contribute to defusing a crisis that could extend its repercussions beyond the parties in confrontation to the region and the world.
The level of representation was not a trivial detail. The presence of Saudi Defense Minister Prince Khalid bin Salman, Pakistani Army Chief General Asim Munir, and Turkish Intelligence Chief Ibrahim Kalin, alongside Iranian officials led by President Masoud Bezhakian, reflects an awareness of the sensitivity of the moment and the importance of keeping communication channels open at the highest levels.
The visit came as an extension of international and regional efforts aimed at reducing tension, foremost among them the Qatari-Pakistani mediation. These efforts require political support and serious will from the concerned parties so that opportunities for de-escalation can transform into a practical path capable of ending the crisis and preventing a return to escalation.
I believe that the Tehran meeting reveals an important aspect of the role of the countries of the Mecca Agreement: combining the protection of their security and interests with diplomatic efforts for regional stability. The power that has the ability to defend its security can also create space for dialogue and push towards solutions that consider the interests and security concerns of the countries in the region.
From this perspective, the agreement to continue consultations on regional peace and security represents an important step that opens the door to building trust and developing dialogue, leading to understandings that enhance stability and consider the interests of the countries in the region.
This step gains its broader meaning when it is based on respecting the sovereignty and security of states, addressing sources of concern, and dealing with the threats posed by armed groups that undermine stability and jeopardize the security of navigation and energy supply lines.
This issue goes beyond the calculations of the region alone. Safe maritime corridors and stable energy supplies represent an international interest, and any disruption in them leaves its mark on the global economy and the lives of millions of people.
As for the nuclear file, it remains part of the broader picture of the crisis, and addressing it requires serious negotiations and guarantees that allow for reaching a sustainable understanding. Regional de-escalation can provide this path with a better opportunity if there is genuine willingness from Tehran to engage positively with mediation efforts.
Internally in Iran, the need for stability appears more urgent. Economic pressures and declining purchasing power do not stop at the numbers, but extend to people's lives, their opportunities, and the aspirations of new generations.
Iran's engagement in the peace process and its integration into the regional economy could open up broader opportunities for trade and investment, and rebuild its relations with its neighbors based on mutual interests. Over time, this could reflect positively on its image before the world and grant it a more influential position in shaping the future of the region.
This path allows Iran to safeguard its interests through stable partnerships and mutual trust, and it requires a mature political vision that transcends the calculations of the moment and looks more broadly at what the country needs today and the future that its coming generations deserve.
The countries of the Mecca Agreement have placed their weight alongside international efforts aimed at sparing the region a new round of escalation. They have agreed with Iran to continue the dialogue, in a step that opens the door to building trust and enhancing stability.
Today, Tehran has a valuable opportunity that may be difficult to replicate; an opportunity to rearrange its relations with its neighbors, engage in peace-making, and open wider horizons for its economy and the future of its generations.
The question remains: Will Tehran seize the message and choose the future?
