The observer of Western media during the month of October, which included the "Yemen Dawn" operation to curb the terrorist militias in Yemen that sought to control the Bab al-Mandab Strait, as a continuation of the encirclement that represents the largest driver for rising energy prices and thus achieves the greatest possible loss at the level of the midterm elections, notes many articles that attacked the Kingdom regarding its defensive capabilities.
The articles focus on several issues, the first being the Kingdom's large military budget, considering it one of the largest investors in the world in building defensive military capabilities, which naturally includes raising local content. Although the figure used, which is around eighty billion, is very tempting to use as a "headline," using it in isolation indicates a structural flaw in the analysis. There are many details about the weapons and their suitability for each battle, and the existence of purchases that have not been received according to the production pace in factories.
Of course, these analyses delve into the details of the aircraft owned by the Kingdom, and at times refer to claims of a shortage of intercept missiles, which is an issue that is overwhelmed by oversimplification in analysis, through several angles, including that it is a story that can be used against American defenses in their confrontation with Iran, and can be cited in the Ukrainian or Russian case. Additionally, countries do not publicly share the quantity of remaining intercept missiles, nor the other means of defense and interception. An important point that is also absent from these analyses is that profit and loss differ in the standards of the Houthis and terrorist militias in general; they hope to target oil-related objectives that serve agendas or civilian sites like airports and homes, which raises the targeting to news priorities. Moreover, the targeting is based on the vast size of the Kingdom, approximately 2.2 million square kilometers, hoping that air defenses will not be able to deter them.
The recurring thesis in several articles is also the failure of the alliances led by the Kingdom. This is a typical narrative of the Houthi story that can be seen in newspapers and channels aligned with the Lebanese and Iraqi axis, and its impact on the axis can be termed as post-traumatic syndrome, as it was not expected that the Kingdom would take the step of the Mecca Agreement with Pakistan and Turkey, and the quadrilateral coordination that included the Republic of Egypt, which suffers from the Houthi's interference affecting the revenues of the Suez Canal.
However, this angle from the Tehran axis found favor in the West, which is the resentment towards the region's ability to create a strong alliance not based on the West, especially the United States. Militarily, logic is absent from this thesis because the goal of the Mecca Alliance is not to decisively win the battle, but rather it is based on several pathways of training and sharing intelligence information, in addition to deploying troops and defense systems if requested by one of the three countries, just as is practiced in Article 5 of NATO.
The final angle that gathered articles in "Bloomberg," "The New York Times," "CBC," "The Guardian," and others is Trump's abandonment of the Kingdom. This angle is largely understandable from an American perspective regarding the administration's unwillingness to open a new front, especially on the brink of midterm elections, in addition to the blockade of Hormuz and the state of readiness with Iran. Although the cooperation between the two parties included intelligence sharing as well, I believe that this specific angle was not intended to attack the Kingdom but rather to say, look how Trump treats his allies and does not stand with them, which is a narrative that exists in Europe and Ukraine and has considerable weight.
It was striking in the overall articles that they brought together spectrums from both the right and the liberal left, which were divided between a stance on everything the Kingdom does and thus exploiting the current battle to attempt to preach the failure of Saudi Arabia's economic vision. This is purely a wishful analysis, and the other issue is a Western superiority that addresses the depletion of a missile from Saudi defenses as a point of weakness, while the depletion of a missile for Israel from its multiple defense layers and missile dome is overlooked, and it is even more ironic that this is written by the same publication!
In conclusion, there is no doubt that the Kingdom has achieved an unprecedented record in interception exceeding 92%, with sources indicating even higher rates. Furthermore, its political weight has not only enabled it to succeed in the Mecca Agreement but also ensured that the British, French, Greeks, and others were keen to participate actively, as the threat to energy sources and the most reliable state as a source of energy through contracts, along with targeting key trade routes, is not just a Saudi challenge. This is what Saudi Arabia has clarified, and everyone has recognized it away from media sensationalism.
The point that remains absent from Western media is the assessment of the extent of the Houthis' human and geographical losses, as well as the losses of missile and ammunition depots and launch stations with the tightening of the blockade on supply lines, not only due to the absence of sources on the ground but also due to the frequent lack of objectivity.
