The Houthis live in a dead end since their coup against legitimacy and their decision to monopolize power in Yemen, a decision that has failed to gain international and regional legitimacy. They now exist in complete isolation, harboring animosity towards their opponents both domestically and abroad. Throughout years of isolation, the Houthis have achieved no developmental or economic gains that enhance the well-being of social life; they have offered Yemenis nothing but slogans instead of bread, death instead of life, and misery instead of prosperity!
They could have accepted a partnership with their compatriots at home and their neighbors abroad, contributing to a developmental journey that the Yemeni people have long aspired to after decades of conflicts, rivalries, and coups. Instead, they chose to exclude the internal front and antagonize the external one, thus isolating themselves and depriving Yemen and Yemenis of partnerships in development, stability, and prosperity. If only they had done this out of belief in an internal project they truly supported, even if it was misguided. Instead, they have tethered Yemen and Yemenis to an external project in which Yemenis have no stake, paying a heavy price in terms of their lives, blood, and living conditions!
What prevents the Houthis from working for Yemen with Yemenis and presenting a reassuring model of partnership and friendship to their neighbors instead of provoking concern with ambitions of armament and threatening the security of the neighborhood and the stability of the region?! Would the elder sister have shied away from meeting them to support the stability and growth of Yemen, having always stood by Yemenis in various circumstances?!
I have no doubt that the Houthis recognize Saudi Arabia's sincerity in helping Yemen, but they are led by an external project that deceives both themselves and the Yemenis with hollow slogans, draining Yemen's resources and missing out on precious opportunities for developmental partnerships, all of which are counted against the lifespan and life of the Yemeni people!
When I reflect on the Houthi rhetoric against Saudi Arabia, I find no justification for the aggression that overflows from it. Saudi Arabia has no ambitions in Yemen; its only interest is to help Yemen and Yemenis achieve development, progress, stability, and prosperity. It is the country that has historically provided the most support to successive Yemeni governments and the largest country hosting Yemeni expatriates, who live on its land without discrimination against its citizens!
In short... it is time for the Houthis to realize that Yemen's salvation lies in reconciling with their partners at home and their good neighbors abroad. Saudi Arabia is their lifeline, while the Iranian project is the weight of their sinking!
