Targeting civilians, civilian objects, and vital facilities essential for people's lives is prohibited and criminalized under the laws of war. This is what countries that understand their responsibilities and obligations towards humanity and international law, as well as their own conscience, apply. In military confrontations, such countries may pay the price of their moral discipline by prolonging the confrontation, missing opportunities, or increasing the cost of war, but this grants them respect, strengthens their position, and solidifies their image before the world as a disciplined state.
This is exactly what the Kingdom is doing as it leads the coalition to support legitimacy in Yemen since the beginning of Operation Decisive Storm in 2015. It is keen to ensure that civilians are not harmed, no matter the cost. You may recall the recording of one of the Saudi pilots who refrained from striking a legitimate Houthi military target located amidst civilians used as human shields. This is what the Houthi militia does as a continuous strategy when it confirmed the coalition's commitment to protecting civilians, thus exploiting them in all its locations. The coalition has not targeted any civilian sites or non-military gatherings, but on the other hand, what is the Houthi militia doing?
They are committing complete war crimes against Saudi targets. Targeting civilian airports, energy facilities, and their transport lines, and killing innocents within them is an unforgivable crime. The world watches these crimes, denounces and condemns them, and expresses sympathy, but it does not take the initiative to classify this militia in its true form as an international terrorist organization subject to prosecution, punishment, and eradication. On the contrary, they have been granted time and legitimacy as a political component to see the results that are happening now.
President Trump has stated more than once this week that the Houthis are committing bad acts. This came after the targeting of King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh and the fall of a large number of victims, but he did not clearly indicate whether he would consider the Houthi militia like ISIS and Al-Qaeda, even though they are much more dangerous. Will America actually participate in eliminating their significant threat within Yemen, in the neighborhood, in the region, and on the international level?
The coalition is carrying out its mission to the fullest, but there is fear of some political currents in the West exploiting the humanitarian tragedy in Yemen caused by the Houthis, then pressuring governments to give the Houthis a lifeline to continue their chaos. We would not be surprised to hear such a trend as happened in 2018 when the liberation of the city of Hodeidah was stalled. But this time, the coalition must not give any value to any attempt aimed at obstructing the complete termination of its mission.
