There is a difference between expanding the exhibition and broadening its concept. The former can be achieved by increasing the space, the wings, and the number of participants, while the latter requires a precise understanding of what draws people in and what might motivate someone who doesn't originally belong to the traditional audience of the exhibition to find something meaningful within it.
This issue becomes clearer in the Saudi International Falcon and Hunting Exhibition, as the name of the exhibition immediately establishes a specific identity linked to falcons and hunting. However, the scene inside has become much broader than the traditional circle of falconers and hunting enthusiasts. It has become possible for visitors to come for falcons, or for trips and adventures, or for heritage and arts, or for business and commerce, or even to come with their families without any prior interest in any of these aspects, only to find their way to the experience.
Meanwhile, one of the toughest challenges in the events industry emerges. The wider the audience circle expands, the greater the risk of losing the event's character. Many events fall into this trap when they try to please everyone, adding more activities and experiences until it becomes difficult to identify the idea that unites them. At that point, they may succeed in increasing the number of visitors, but they pay a price in terms of the clarity of their identity.
The smarter equation is to expand the audience without moving the center of the event. This is what makes the falcon significant in reading the evolution of the exhibition; it does not need to be present in every experience to remain at the heart of the identity, because the world surrounding it is broader than the bird itself, extending to the desert, trips, hunting, crafts, tools, horses, camels, nature, arts, and social memory. These are different circles that can each expand to a new audience without separating from the original story.
In this way, diversity becomes an extension of identity, not a competitor to it, allowing the exhibition to address multiple interests simultaneously without appearing as a collection of events gathered in one place. A visitor who starts their journey from cars and trip gear may reach another aspect of hunting culture, while someone seeking a family experience may leave with knowledge they previously lacked about falconry. Those drawn to crafts or history may find themselves facing cultural details linked to the heritage upon which the exhibition is based.
This transformation is important in the events industry because building an audience does not always mean looking for people who resemble the current audience. Sometimes, true growth lies in discovering new circles that can connect to the idea from different angles. Here, the event transforms from a date for a specific group into a destination with more than one entrance, while all entrances still lead to the same identity.
Perhaps the fact that the Falcon and Hunting Exhibition reached over 700,000 visitors last year raises a question that goes beyond the number itself. It is illogical to view this attendance as merely an extension of the falconers' audience alone; it is more likely that it reflects the widening base of interest in the event and its ability to attract segments that came for various reasons. This also explains why this year's slogan, "A Destination for Everyone," expresses a stage the exhibition has reached more than it is just a seasonal phrase.
However, reaching a broader audience imposes greater responsibility because the specialized visitor knows what they are looking for, while the new visitor needs a journey built for them to understand the place and the relationship between its components. Therefore, this might be one of the most interesting lessons from the experience of the Falcon and Hunting Exhibition: true expansion does not mean moving away from the starting point but discovering the extent of the world that can be built around it. The clearer the center is, the more the surrounding circles can expand.
