O our great Yemeni poet Abdullah Al-Bardouni.. The day I stood before Abu Tammam and asked him: "What should I say about Sana'a, my father?".. You did not know that the question would linger after you.. and that Sana'a would endure such pain that the answer would be harder than the question.
So what should I tell you about her, O father of Yemen? I tell you that the Houthis entered your city in the name of saving it.. then it became narrow for its people and wide for weapons. They took Yemen's name and history.. and left its people with fear, hunger, and war. Whenever they spoke of victory.. a Yemeni mother would ask about her son.. and a father would ask about the bread for his home.. and a child would ask when he could return to his school.
I once said: "It is terrible ignorance of what is happening.. and even more terrible to know." And we know, O Bardouni.. we see a country that wants to live.. and a group that wants it to remain in war. They claim to speak on behalf of the Yemenis.. yet they do not leave them the right to object. They raise the flag of Yemen.. and ask the Yemeni to surrender his voice, his child, and his future.
You used to say: "Yemenis in exile.. and exiles in Yemen." How harsh it is for a person to leave his country fleeing from war.. and how harsh it is to remain in it.. then feel alien in his own city. To search for safety behind his home’s door.. for a word he can say without fear.. and for a tomorrow that is not decided under the muzzle of a gun.
O Bardouni.. your old sigh still crosses the mountains and plains of Yemen. And when you described a people as "feeding on the hearts of the hungry".. you left us an image that is hard to forget. The hunger of the people intensifies.. yet those who trade in their misery remain unsatisfied. The Yemeni needs a loaf of bread, medicine, and work.. and finds someone demanding more patience from him.. so that a war he did not choose can continue.
You called out to Yemen: "O my green mother Yemen." And we felt your love for her in the neighborhood.. so we loved her people.. and we answered her call when the ordeal extended to our homes. But a faction made Yemen's land a launchpad for weapons towards its neighbors.. and wronged it and us. Yet still.. we have never confused the faces; we know Yemen by its people.. and we do not reduce it to those who have usurped its decision. We know it in its homes, markets, and fields.. and in the men and women who want for their children a life that is not measured by the length of war.
O Bardouni.. you did not foresee the Houthis.. but you knew what tyranny does when it wears the garment of the homeland.. and what war does when it becomes the livelihood of those who ignite it. That is why your words still hurt us throughout the Arab world.. because Sana'a, which you addressed, was not just a city in a poem.. it was a mother we fear for.
I asked Abu Tammam what to tell him about Sana'a.. and today we tell you: there are still those who love her as you loved her.. and who want her to return to being a home for all her people. Sana'a is waiting for her children.. to restore her to herself.
