In the event of an American escalation with Iran, we remember the threats from the Iranian regime that if Iran is prevented from exporting its oil, not a single drop of oil will come out of the region. This is what happened due to the closure of the Strait of Hormuz and the attacks carried out by the Revolutionary Guard against ships attempting to cross the strait without complying with Iranian conditions. It seems that this situation has changed recently, as the U.S. Central Military Command announced its escort of hundreds of oil tankers through the Strait of Hormuz, indicating that Iran is losing in this crucial aspect. The recent mobilization of the Houthi militia in an attempt to control and dominate Bab el-Mandeb may be an effort to compensate for Iran's weakness in the Strait of Hormuz. There is a lack of credibility in what the American side claims in this context, especially from President Trump, who has noticeably reduced his statements on this matter in recent weeks, focusing instead on the ongoing diplomatic negotiations between the two sides in New York involving some members of the Iranian delegation participating in the United Nations General Assembly and American officials like Tuckoff and Kushner.
A few days ago, the American ban on Iranian civil aviation from operating outside Iran began, and most countries complied with this decision. Mohammad Mohber, an advisor to the Supreme Leader, tweeted on his X platform account, stating that his country's strategy is clear: either air travel is available to everyone in the region or it is not available to anyone. This is a clear threat to air traffic in the region, which is very sensitive to such threats and circumstances. The Iranian stance came after countries like Iraq, which has a special relationship, suspended air services to some airports in Iraq with Iran and other Gulf countries, despite the continuation of small flights from Iran to China, which did not comply with the American decision.
The American maritime blockade on Iran, and now the air blockade, is an effective tool in exhausting and suffocating the Iranian regime internally. It may cause the desired disruption in the relationship between the people and the regime, which military actions against Iran since last February have failed to achieve. The Iranian regime may bet that the impact of these sanctions may take a long time to show negative results that serve the American strategy. Additionally, Iran has accumulated experience in evading this American maritime and air blockade against it. As for the threat to neighboring countries that their airports will not operate if Iranian airports cease to function, this is a difficult hypothesis to realize. If the Revolutionary Guard targets civilian airports in the region, it would mean a clear declaration of war on neighboring countries, and I believe that Iran will not proceed with this, as these facilities are purely civilian and are not used for logistical purposes as Iran claimed when targeting Gulf countries under the pretext of the presence of American military bases there. The situation here is different and very sensitive, and it could reveal the true face of the regime and embarrass it in front of its allies who have close ties with Gulf countries.
Washington has tested various types of sanctions with Saddam's Iraq, which had devastating effects on dismantling and weakening the structure of the regime at that time. We remember the collapse of its institutions at the beginning of the war and the American ground invasion of Iraq. The approach may not be accurate in the case of Iran, but it is less dangerous and costly for America in pushing Iran to the negotiating table and agreeing to American conditions, despite the costs that the Iranian people may bear, rather than the regime in the end.
