Western politicians, sitting at their distant desks, believe they are moving chess pieces, while the reality in the Gulf and the Middle East is that time spins in endless loops, and wars are born from a fleeting idea in the mind of a general or a cleric who has not read history well. In the Gulf specifically, the game today seems more complicated than ever. It is a game of military and political balance that resembles walking on a tightrope over a chasm steeped in oil and memories.
The Kingdom moves in this scene with much caution, dignity, and calm. It realizes, just as European politicians did on the eve of World War I, that being drawn into enthusiastic provocation is an unforgivable sin. The Kingdom has much to lose, while the other side does not. This is Riyadh's equation, which governs the scene with precision. In its dictionary today, the following appears: it has a lot, indeed far too much, to lose. Rapid development, promising digital cities, major projects transforming the desert into laboratories for the future, and an economic vision racing against time. The Kingdom has replaced the era of building with the era of guns, and it believes that war is a massacre of development opportunities and a free destruction of every chance available to build the future.
On the other side of the Gulf, the adversary and his regional militias stand in a completely different position. Here lies the tragic irony of politics; the enemy in this equation has little to lose. His cities are exhausted, his economy is besieged, his infrastructure has decayed, and his people live behind the dust of successive living crises. It is an unequal confrontation in motivations; one side is keen on protecting its future and gains, while the other sees igniting fires as the only means of political survival, ready to burn down the entire forest just to warm itself on its ashes.
This region has lived through several conflicts over half a century that have highlighted the fragile balance, carving deep wounds into its body and leaving a series of exorbitant bills. We remember the Iran-Iraq war. An absurd tragedy that lasted eight years, destroying the energies of two countries without changing an inch of borders. It is a picture of free death and illusory victory. And we remember Saddam Hussein's adventure in invading Kuwait. It seemed as if he was shooting himself in the foot and the foot of the entire region, destroying decades of regional stability for mere illusions of individual military power.
These conflicts have proven that they always end in ruin that affects everyone; therefore, the pinnacle of political realism is found in the Kingdom's keenness to avoid being dragged into a conflict arena chosen by the adversary in terms of time and place. It is the character of regional maturity, which refuses to succumb to a pre-announced ruin. Thus, maintaining military balance in the Gulf does not only mean stockpiling weapons, but primarily means possessing the wisdom of deprivation; to deprive the enemy of the opportunity to drag you into a quagmire they have long worked on.
In the end, history in the Middle East is unforgiving, and the true victor is the one who keeps his cities illuminated with the light of hope and development amidst the darkness of surrounding wars.
