The phrase "Europe to fascism... march" is no longer just an exaggerated warning; the results of the Saxony-Anhalt elections in Germany reveal the extent of the erosion that has affected the political and moral immunity of the continent. The Alternative for Germany party topped the results, coming close to the possibility of leading the state government, although the electoral victory does not mean that it has actually taken power. This distinction is necessary, but it does not lessen the seriousness of the scene: a party that classifies its local branch as far-right is now demanding to translate its electoral superiority into authority over state institutions.
After more than eight decades since the end of World War II, Europe faces a test that touches the foundations upon which it built its democratic project, especially in the West of the continent before it extended eastward: human dignity, equal citizenship, limiting power by law, protecting minorities, and social solidarity. This project has not been fully realized and has been marred by contradictions and violations, but it has made overcoming racism and aggressive nationalism a political and moral commitment.
Today, this reference point is under an organized attempt to overturn it, where the different is accused, and the refugee becomes a ready explanation for every crisis, while rights become a burden to be disposed of. The danger of the alternative is manifested in transforming economic and social anxiety into hostility towards human groups, then presenting exclusion as a rescue program. The citizen who fears a decline in income or the collapse of services needs solutions for wages, housing, and investment, while being led to believe that restoring their future passes through tightening the screws on their different neighbor.
Thus, anger is redirected away from responsible policies, and the discussion about wealth distribution is replaced by a struggle over the identity of those deserving of rights. The repercussions do not end with migrants; a state that accepts varying degrees of dignity based on origin opens the door to disparities in freedoms based on loyalty. When democracy is reduced to an electoral majority, the ballot box can be used to weaken oversight, besiege the media, subjugate institutions, and dry up the civil space. This is precisely where the susceptibility to slipping into fascism lies: emptying pluralism of its content under the banner of saving the nation.
Therefore, the possibility of this party reaching a state government carries weight that exceeds its borders; local authority provides tools to influence education, administration, and security, and it may become a laboratory for normalizing practices that later transfer to the federal level. As for the traditional parties that confront extremism by borrowing its vocabulary, they grant it a certificate of validity and help it set the agenda for discussion. Their responsibility multiplies when they ask people to defend democracy without providing them with social security or a convincing economic horizon.
The scene is connected to a wave that transcends borders, previously heralded by former Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán. These forces do not align perfectly in everything, but they exchange encouragement and normalize hostility towards pluralism. A world where exclusionary nationalisms advance becomes more prepared for trade wars, less capable of cooperating on climate and asylum, and more tolerant of the logic of power and double standards.
Internal conflicts are also fueled by rhetoric that portrays the opposition as treason and diversity as a threat, turning natural differences into a constant suspicion among members of society. The global cost increases as Europe's retreat from its rights-based reference point provides repressive authorities with an additional justification for their violations and weakens the credibility of international institutions that need states to defend their rules even when they conflict with their immediate interests.
This is the real bet: the ability of the modern state to protect everyone from the arbitrariness of power and the majority alike. Fascism is not an inevitable European fate, but preventing it requires a political and social confrontation that goes beyond mere condemnation. The danger begins when exclusion becomes a normal opinion, escalates when it becomes government policy, and culminates in disaster when society becomes accustomed to having the rights of others stripped away in its name.
