أسمع وأشاهد ثمّة عملاً على (قدم وساق) حول دوّار الجمل، وتدور الأقاويل أن هذا الدوّار سيزال، ويتحوّل الشارع إلى مسارات أربعة تحجز كل مسار إشارة ضوئية، فهل وصلت الأمانة أو المرور إلى هذا الحل؟ أليس في الجهتين مهندسون أكفاء، يستندون إلى حل هندسي من غير إزالة دوّار له إرث في قلوب الناس، نعرف أنه أُزيلت (دوارات) عديدة، وتم ركن مجسماتها في زاوية أدّت إلى موات المجسم وكذلك مسمّى الشارع.
الإشارات الضوئية كانت إحدى المعرقلات في السير، وحمدنا الله حين تم إنشاء كباري، وكذلك إيجاد حل هندسي من خلال التحويلات، وغابت كثرة الإشارات المرورية إلا فيما ندر، وعودة إشارات المرور في مكان مزدحم ستساهم في فك الازدحام، ولن تكون إزالة الدوّار واستبداله بإشارة مرور حلاً مثاليّاً، ألم تكن هناك دراسة لأوضاع الشوارع، واجتهاد فعلي لتقليل الازدحامات المميتة؟
إنّ الحل يكون من قبل مهندسين قبل أن يكون من الإداريين سواء في الأمانة أو المرور.
ومن المعروف لدى الجهتين أنّ أحياء شمال جدة مختنقة مروريّاً، وإن أُزيل دوار الجمل ستضاف معضلة مرورية ليس لها داعٍ، فبقاء الدوار أفضل من إزالته، الآن الزحمة موجودة إلّا أن هذا الوضع الحالي أفضل ألف مرة من وجود إشارات مرورية. تصوروا أن الإشارة حمراء أمام النازلين من الكوبري، من الآن أقول إنّ أرتالاً من السيارات ستقف، وتوقف كل الناس القادمين باتجاه الشارع.
يا إخواننا ابحثوا لنا عن حلٍّ مريحٍ، وأيضاً دوّار الجمل تحفة فنية غارقة في قلوبنا وتاريخنا، سيكون مؤسفاً لو تم ترحيل الجمال إلى شوارع أخرى، نعم سينزوي في مكان آخر، وستموت جملة «نلتقي عند دوّار الجمل».
I hear and see that there is work (in full swing) around the Camel Roundabout, and rumors are circulating that this roundabout will be removed, transforming the street into four lanes, each with a traffic signal. Has the municipality or traffic department reached this solution? Are there not competent engineers on both sides who can rely on an engineering solution without removing a roundabout that holds significance in the hearts of the people? We know that many (roundabouts) have been removed, and their structures have been relegated to a corner, leading to the demise of both the structure and the name of the street.
Traffic signals were one of the obstacles to traffic flow, and we thanked God when bridges were built, as well as finding an engineering solution through diversions. The number of traffic signals diminished except in rare cases, and the return of traffic signals in a crowded area will contribute to alleviating congestion. Replacing the roundabout with a traffic signal will not be an ideal solution. Was there not a study of the street conditions and a genuine effort to reduce deadly traffic jams?
The solution should come from engineers before it comes from administrators, whether in the municipality or traffic department.
It is well known to both parties that the neighborhoods in North Jeddah are congested. If the Camel Roundabout is removed, it will add an unnecessary traffic dilemma. Keeping the roundabout is better than removing it. The congestion is present, but this current situation is a thousand times better than having traffic signals. Imagine if the signal is red for those coming down from the bridge; I can already say that lines of cars will stop, and all the people coming towards the street will be halted.
Oh, our brothers, please find us a comfortable solution. Also, the Camel Roundabout is an artistic masterpiece deeply rooted in our hearts and history. It would be unfortunate if the camels were relocated to other streets. Yes, it will be tucked away in another place, and the phrase "We meet at the Camel Roundabout" will die.
