A few days ago, the "Shanghai Cooperation Organization" summit was held in China, representing a continuation of its strategic efforts to reduce economic dependence on the West and limit its material and political dominance. Consequently, it includes countries that are in opposition to the West, such as Russia and North Korea, and aims to strengthen alliances with countries that are not necessarily outside the Western sphere, such as India and Pakistan.
Summit leaders, for their part, mastered the media messages and photo smiles that reached Washington directly, with frustration directed first at Russia and then at India to a greater extent. President Trump expressed on the Truth Social platform that they went to China, and his Commerce Secretary amplified the tone of anger by repeatedly mentioning the 50% tariff on New Delhi.
Of course, it is hard to imagine that India and China have become allies overnight, representing the dance of the dragon and the elephant as described by the Chinese president. There is a legacy of many disputes, whether in border issues, security, or otherwise. However, who said that today's politics and the efforts of several countries in the organization and beyond confine the horizon to the paths of allies or enemies only? Politics, at the end of the day, is about enduring interests.
The summit also featured, in terms of visual messages, a military display said to commemorate the end of World War II and the "defeat of Japan." Chinese weapons had previously gained some good reputation through Pakistan's use of some Chinese hypersonic missiles and aircraft in its recent confrontation with India.
However, the display went further in showcasing military might through other highly advanced weapons, such as missiles aimed at aircraft carriers, robotic dogs, and the Dongfeng-5C, a hypersonic missile that can reach the United States in 20 minutes, according to the English newspaper The Sun.
This Chinese display reminds us of the presentation that welcomed Trump's return to the White House, which took place on January 10 when the "Deep Seek" app was revealed. Within a week of its launch, the app became the most downloaded on the Apple Store, surpassing its American counterparts, in addition to its low cost. To refresh memories, the news of Deep Seek led to heavy losses for digital companies in the United States.
Three days after the Shanghai summit, a lavish dinner gathered tech company leaders in Washington, D.C., which included Bill Gates and the CEOs of Meta, OpenAI, Oracle, Google, Apple, and others, held in the main dining room of the White House with the presence of U.S. President Donald Trump and his wife Melania.
The visual messages were also clear in the media, not least in the seating arrangement, with Mark Zuckerberg on the president's right and Bill Gates on his left. The messages also represented a signal of alignment between the government and the private sector or coordination and cooperation on key frameworks, showcasing a supportive government and company leaders announcing investments of billions of dollars in data centers, infrastructure, and innovation.
However, even those gathered at the White House, with the notable absence of Elon Musk, are not friends; rather, they are fierce competitors in many cases, especially with the firm belief that human minds are the most crucial asset in artificial intelligence investments. One of the latest stories is Meta attracting several minds from Apple with huge contracts and bonuses.
Between meetings and two poles, adversaries gather where Machiavellianism sparkles without slogans. All of this reminds us of the novel "The Brothers Karamazov" by the great Russian writer Dostoevsky, which was also adapted into a work starring Salah El-Saadani titled "The Enemy Brothers." One of the timeless phrases from that novel states, "People do not ask about the truth, but about what benefits them in the present moment."
