Why is the resolution of the status of press institutions delayed?! Can we rely solely on one entity or limited media entities to form a media front that supports national issues and confronts external media attacks?! Or is there a belief that social media accounts alone are capable of forming a media resistance front?!
It must be noted that my call for addressing the situations of press institutions does not mean demanding financial support for them, nor does it imply insisting on the continuation of print journalism, as these institutions have already transitioned to publishing through digital platforms. Rather, my request is an extension of a previous demand made years ago to amend the press institutions' system, allowing investors to re-establish their work strategies and management, and to direct their path towards horizons that keep pace with media developments and its new tools. The current media entities possess a legacy of archival materials that is priceless; I would not exaggerate if I described it as the memory of the nation and the archive of its history. Moreover, abandoning professional journalistic expertise, which is fading day by day due to these entities' inability to achieve profits, is tantamount to killing the profession!
There is no substitute for having strong media and journalistic entities to support the national vision and its ambitious projects, at least to serve as the vessel that embraces some of the talents that will be produced by the scholarship program recently announced by the Ministry of Media. It is noteworthy that most countries have supported their media and press institutions to enhance the role of professional journalists and opinion writers in influencing public opinion and forming a credible reference during events and crises and dealing with their repercussions!
No one denies the role of social media accounts and their impact, and many journalists and opinion writers successfully perform their individual roles through them. However, relying solely on them and prioritizing individual roles, which are dominated by personal efforts, while neglecting the role of professional media and press entities, is akin to sailing in a tumultuous sea buffeted by winds from every direction without a rudder!
In short, neglecting the crisis of press institutions and failing to resolve their situations, either by amending the system to break the stagnation in the relationship with their owners, or by imposing the necessary reforms and changes to keep pace with developments in media investments and its digital tools, is a neglect of the opportunity to benefit from valuable entities, especially since the cost of addressing their situations will not exceed what is allocated to some new media and sports platforms!
