Defeat in the world of football is a common occurrence and an accepted reality in its competitions, and it should be accepted with sportsmanship, especially if the defeated team has given its all but was let down by circumstances or lacked luck and fortune. At that point, there is no doubt that you find excuses for the coach, players, and management, and you write as a fair sports critic: "You did not fall short... you are excused."
- What I witnessed in the Super Cup match held last Tuesday afternoon between Al-Ittihad and Al-Nassr, and the dismal and extremely weak performance of Benzema and his teammates, is something that cannot be excused or justified in any way that would make you "turn a blind eye" and overlook this loss.
- Honestly, what happened in this match is a "historical farce," and remaining silent about it is an unforgivable crime against a great club with its name and rich history. I can even say that it is, in every sense of the word, the mother of all farces, and the evidence is as clear as the sun at noon.
- What I saw from every angle is much more than just a loss, greater than the technical differences that imposed "the gap," greater than saying that the team was not at its best, and greater than the excuse that it was the first match of the season and one cannot judge a team that is not fully ready. The reality is that Al-Ittihad was suffering from "administrative and technical laxity" before the match, and I mean what I say.
- This "laxity" is primarily the responsibility of both the administrative and technical staff together. This explains the negligence and indifference displayed by the team captain and his colleagues, in addition to a coach whose presence was as ineffective as his absence. The natural result of this was a disastrous failure for a camp that primarily lacked discipline. The evidence: the poor and collapsed physical fitness of the players, in addition to the absence of psychological and moral motivation to win.
Here are four pieces of evidence to confirm this:
1- The players failed to take advantage of the red card shown to an Al-Nassr player in the 25th minute of the first half, and instead, they appeared worse afterward.
2- The fighting spirit to equalize was absent, and a defeatist spirit surrendered to the loss of an "easy" championship was present.
3- The coach remained a spectator of his crumbling team without any intervention, and he made his substitutions only seven minutes before the end, as if he were seeking defeat! Not to mention playing without a clear method or tactics.
4- Karim Benzema—what can I say about Benzema—brought back memories of his poor start with Al-Ittihad. Missing easy chances, losing focus, and a complete absence of his role as a leader of the team or a "hidden coach" as he appeared last season. We did not see him giving any instructions or interventions in the face of a disorganized defense and a full-back providing an easy passage for the Al-Nassr players, along with a favorite friend (Houssem Aouar) who had no presence, making it seem as if Al-Ittihad was playing with a disadvantage.
- These cases of "laxity" do not absolve in any way the CEO Domingo Suarez and the sporting director Ramon Planes from responsibility. Where were your follow-ups during and after the camp? If you had a strong presence and interest as we have known you, we would not have seen this crumbling team, both technically and morally.
- As for the president of Al-Ittihad, Engineer Fahd Sindi:
Be careful first, and secondly, the fans are waiting for you to take a firm stance as a leader in whom they have placed their full trust, and in your administrative experience.
